THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Career, Love and Personal in ‘Not Far From the Tree’

By  |

The season four finale of THE BOLD TYPE left the leading ladies in interesting places, with pasts affecting futures. We sure hope that the series is picked up for another season because we were left in some pretty interesting situations. Join us as we break down the events of last night’s episode through the lenses of career, love and personal!

CAREER

The season finale was a big one for Jane in terms of her career. Jacqueline informs her that her recent article on discrimination in the workplace has received the most clicks and more importantly, Jacqueline wants Jane to have a big presence at an important upcoming presentation with advertisers, an event that she has dubbed the upfronts for magazines. If Jane couldn’t be more flattered, Jacqueline then tells her that she’s not the future of Scarlet, Jane is! The high Jane is riding doesn’t last too long though. She uncovers another controversial workplace story and is keen to pursue it. Jacqueline is all for it at first, until she discovers her husband has a connection to one of the subjects involved in the story. He asks Jacqueline to pull the plug on it, citing that it could look bad for her given the personal connection. Once Jane finds out Jacqueline’s real reason for pulling the story, she stands up to her boss and pushes to keep going ahead with it. Jane tells Jacqueline that the story is everything that Jacqueline has taught Jane about Scarlet. Swayed, Jacqueline gives her the go ahead to continue pursuing the story, but warns her that the story needs to be completely bullet proof before it’s published because there is too much at stake.

Also experiencing career complications is Kat. Her first podcast at The Belle has now gone live and as expected there’s been a bit of mixed feelings about it, or namely her first subject, Ava. In an effort to appease those who weren’t so keen on it, Kat’s boss at The Belle, arranges for less conservative guests to appear on the podcast. Kat agrees but you can tell she feels uncomfortable.

LOVE

After Richard left her at the end of last week’s episode, Sutton is understandably struggling and is confused. Is she getting a divorce? Are they now separated? She hasn’t gotten out of bed in a couple of days, but her friends are there for her and ready to coax her out of bed and back into the world. She goes to work, but it’s not long before she breaks down in front of Oliver and is sent home. Instead of going back to her apartment, she goes back to her hometown of Harrisburgh. There she runs into her high school boyfriend, who is now a father and married. After a few drinks and a trip down memory lane, they end up sleeping together, only to be caught by his wife the next morning. Disgusted, she scornfully tells Sutton that she’s just like her mother. Uh oh. We’re thinking this hurtful barb plays a part in Sutton taking off her wedding ring at the end of the episode…

That’s the status of Sutton’s love life. Are her besties’ situations any less complicated? Jane shares with Kat that Scott told her he has feelings for her and as surprised as Jane is, she’s determined to tell him nothing can happen. Using this revelation as a segue way, Kat tries to subtly (or not so subtly in our opinion) suss out what Jane thinks about Ava. Jane is not a fan and when she later accompanies Kat to The Belle and notices Kat and Ava being way too friendly for two people who oppose one another, it all begins to click. Just as well, because Kat and Ava end up hooking up at Ava’s place. Don’t get too excited though – Kat sneaks out while Ava is sleeping and later tells Ava by text that she can’t be with her because it’s too complicated.

Speaking of complications, Jacqueline and Ian seem to be in a good place and are happily making plans for their upcoming trip to Iceland. After Ian meets with Jane about the story she’s working on (he worked for the company she’s investigating), he then reveals to Jacqueline that one of the people Jane is investigating for the story, is a woman he was seeing in Ukraine while they were separated. Awkward. Even more so, he tells her that she needs to stop Jane from pursuing the story as if it runs, it’ll look like Jacqueline is a scorned woman with a vendetta against the lady. It’ll also reveal their relationship problems to their sons. Jacqueline initially agrees not to go ahead with the story but Jane talks her back into it. We’re not sure how Ian is going to feel about this. Will it cause more problems in their already rocky marriage?

PERSONAL

Between Richard leaving her, realising that she slept with a married man and seeing that her mother has gone back to her old habits of drinking and distracting herself with men, Sutton is not in a great place. Being told she’s just like her mother is also messing with her head and when she tells her friends that going back home was ‘a great reminder of who I am’, it had much darker undertones than they realise. We can’t help but notice the extra drinking and the act she put on when the trio started dancing. We’re worried about our girl Sutton and need a season five to make sure that she comes out of this dark place okay!
