THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Personal, Career and Love in ‘Lost’

By  |

There were plenty of struggles in last night’s episode of THE BOLD TYPE, as each of the leading ladies dealt with personal challenges. Join us as we break down the personal, career and love events from ‘Lost’…

PERSONAL

The big personal event in this week’s episode was Sutton and Richard going to the doctor’s for their baby’s first ultrasound, only for the doctor to find no heartbeat and tell them that a miscarriage would happen within 48 hours. It was tough to watch, especially given how excited they were that morning and Richard giving Sutton a baby book. After the appointment, Sutton’s husband and friends are concerned about her but she tells them that she’s fine. Really she’s numb and doesn’t want to feel numb. Eventually the miscarriage occurs and at the end of the episode, she tells her best friends that she needs them. They come over to comfort her and she tearfully admits that she doesn’t think that she even wanted the baby. What this revelation means for her and Richard, we’ll have to keep watching to find out.

With Kat moving in with Jane, it’s time to pack up her apartment. Oh the memories! Kat always bounces back though and finds a new project to distract herself with – starting a podcast at The Belle. Agreeing to a trial run, Kat then seeks the help of Alex to buy gear. (Side note, it was really great to get a whole bunch of scenes between these two and see more of their friendship!) Unfortunately, having only just started bartending, Kat is low on funds to afford the equipment. Alex offers to lend her money and then gear from Scarlet after she refuses to accept his financial help, but she doesn’t want to jeopardise his job. She also refutes his suggestion of selling her belongings rather than putting them in storage. She comes around though and lets go of in her inability to let go and asks Alex for his help on selling her items. When it seems like Kat really has given up her belongings, at the end of the episode Jane reveals that she bought back “Connie”, Kat’s beloved couch, for their apartment.

As for Jane, she’s still struggling with her new body after her double mastectomy and implants. As much as she loves her friends, she’s reluctant to confide in them about her feelings. She ends up opening up to her employee Scott and he suggests finding a support group. Jane then puts out a call out to form a support group at The Belle. Just when it seems like no one is going to turn up, they do. (To be real, Jane had given them like 5 minutes before deciding that no one was going to show up. Tiny Jane, not everyone is as organised and punctual as you are!) Looks like she has found her people after all.

CAREER

Having lost her job at Scarlet and about to lose her apartment, Kat is trying to find a new purpose. After talking with a customer at The Belle and hearing about her work at a women’s shelter, Kat feels herself being inspired again. She gets an idea about broadcasting the talks at The Belle over social media, which triggers an additional idea of starting up a podcast. Her boss agrees to giving her a test run and Kat dives into the task, determined for it to be a success, even if it means swallowing her own personal pride. Luckily she has a friend who knows a thing or two about podcasts – Alex!

After receiving the news about her miscarriage, Sutton throws herself into a styling side job despite telling her friends that she was going to go home and rest. The gig is dressing a four-year-old for his Kindergarten graduation party. It’s a raw reminder of what could have been for Sutton, but she’s a professional and puts on a brave first. Most of the styling is done when the miscarriage starts.

LOVE

When Jane reveals that she used her special personal friend (vibrator) for the first time in awhile, her friends are all encouraging and Kat even goes as far as to suggest that it’s time for her to get back out into the dating world. Jane finds herself agreeing to a double date. On the date things are going well – Kat even texts Sutton that she thinks Jane will be having sex that night. Indeed Jane takes her date back home and things are getting hot and heavy, until he touches her breasts and she panics and cools things off. You can tell the guy is confused but he stops and leaves.

Things are good between Sutton and Richard as they look forward to being pregnant. After the doctor’s appointment, Richard is concerned about Sutton but supports her and gives her the space that she needs. When the miscarriage does happen and the feelings start to hit her, he’s there to comfort her. We’re not sure what will happen between them now though after Sutton’s revelation at the end of the episode that she doesn’t think she wanted the pregnancy. We hope that this doesn’t break them.

As for the other marriage on the show, Jacqueline and Ian are working things out but it’s not all makeup sex. He’s  not exactly thrilled when he hears that she reunited with a past lover during their separation. But it’s exactly that, they were separated and at least she’s being honest and opening up to him about the way her ex lover made her feel seen. It sounds like he listens to her though rather than letting pride get in the way. When she arrives home, he shows her that he too sees her in his own way.

THE BOLD TYPE airs Thursdays at 10/9c on Freeform.
