THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Career, Love and Personal in ‘Tearing Down the Donut Wall’

Wedding fever was in the air in the latest episode of  THE BOLD TYPE, but not everyone was swept up in the wedding euphoria. This did give us plenty to talk about in terms of career, love and personal!

CAREER

Fresh off wedding doughnut tasting, wedding fever is in the air for the hero trinity. So much so that Jane pitches a wedding roundup with a millennial twist at the next Scarlet meeting. Jacqueline tries to shut it down due to obvious personal reasons that no one else is aware about, but everyone is keen on the idea – even Oliver, so it’s going ahead. After the meeting, Oliver notices that something is off with Jacqueline and asks her if she’s okay, to which she replies, ‘I have to be. I have a magazine to run.’ (This Nice Girl can definitely relate to that mentality!)

Oblivious Jane decides to interview Jacqueline about her wedding day. They’re interrupted by an international phone call that Jacqueline has to take and Jane forgets that she leaves behind her phone. When she retrieves later on and is listening to the various recordings that she made for her article, she realizes that she accidentally recorded Jacqueline talking on the phone to Ian about their marriage issues. Jane doesn’t feel right including Jacqueline’s story in her feature and since it was a big part of her piece, she decides to write a listicle instead and weakly argues that listicles are all the rage with millennials so it’s all good. Wrong. Jacqueline is not impressed and doesn’t hold back when she tells Jane that the listicle was the worst work that she had done. Jane was the one who put forward the wedding roundup and wants her own vertical and she didn’t deliver. Jane ends up admitting to Jacqueline about the recording and that being the reason why she didn’t deliver. Later, Jane is at her desk looking at her parents’ wedding momentos when Jacqueline sees her. Jane speaks fondly about her parents and wishes she had a do over with the article. Jacqueline tells her she has two hours and Jane ends up speaking to her dad and writing a story about The Pursuit of Happily Ever After in what I am pretty sure was more than two hours. (Why Jane just didn’t write about her parents to begin with is beyond me.)

Elsewhere, Sutton begins the episode bummed about her low stats on her influencer account, but after taking part in the Scarlet shoot and being tagged on their socials, her followers soar. Oh the world we live in today!

LOVE

As we know, things between Jacqueline and her husband Ian have not been great. Now Jacqueline is lurking on socials and seeing him in group photos looking happier than he ever did with her in a long time. She shares details about her wedding day with Jane but it’s interesting to note the sort of details that she chooses to share – trivial things like her mom telling her to eat a banana, rather than what she felt for Ian. When she and Jane later discuss the conversation that Jane accidentally recorded, Jane asks Jacqueline what went wrong with her marriage. Jacqueline admits that she stopped making time for Ian and eventually her stopped making time for her. She then confides in Oliver that while Ian is away, they are separating. The episode ends with Jacqueline leaving the Scarlet office all dolled up and looking pretty badass!

Hearing about Jacqueline’s marriage woes has Jane thinking about her own perceptions about happily ever after and what she thinks she knows. Jane ends up calling her dad to ask him about her parents marriage and what the day to day relationship was like. She knows that they don’t really talk about things like that since her mother died but she would really like to. Her dad talks about how her mother used to leave post it notes for him and he advises Jane that a good marriage is a constant dance of compromise, commitment and communication. He then asks her about her love life and it’s interesting to note that up until now he didn’t know about Ryan. Even before the whole cheating fiasco, Jane and Pinstripe were together for awhile so I’m surprised that she’s never mentioned him to her dad before!

On a less heavy note, we have Kat back in the game and looking for unattached and non emotional connections on dating apps. She swipes on someone that she declares is perfect for her because ‘she’s wrong in every possible way’. The way Kat sees it, that way there’s no chance of it getting serious or forming an emotional connection. No connection means no feelings and no getting hurt. It sounds great in theory but when her hookup stays the night, they go get breakfast together and the hookup also invites Kat to her friend’s birthday that night, to which Kat accepts – warning bells go off in our heads. Warning bells also go off in Kat’s head that night when she meets the friends and sees how well she’s getting along with her supposed hookup. She ends up panicking and ghosting the girl and then meeting up with Sutton and Jane. She laments that she’s the stereotype lesbian that brings the moving van in on the second date. She reaches out to the hookup to apologize and let her know that she’s not ready for a relationship. There are no hard feelings. The bartender overhears the conversation and also happened to be there during their first date, so he gives Kat a drink. We later see them hooking up, which I totally called by the way!

PERSONAL

The episode opens up with the girls donut testing for Sutton’s wedding. It’s exciting to see wedding plans are underway, but when it comes to the dress, Sutton is way less enthused. She’s the model for the Scarlet wedding roundup but seeing all the wedding dresses is sending her into a tailspin rather than making her excited. She’s not sold on the traditional white and lacy options, particularly since she’s not from a traditional family. These feelings and that anxiety pretty much trigger Sutton when she is sent by Oliver to go to Carly’s school to drop off her school uniform after something happened to the one that she was wearing. That something is actually Carly customising her uniform to show off her own individuality, something that impresses Sutton and she’s totally Team Carly and thinks uniforms are oppressive and antiquated. The principal is not impressed with Sutton’s opinion and sends Carly home. Oliver is not impressed when he hears what happens and there is tension between the two. Things blow over though with Oliver explaining why he’s Team Uniforms and Sutton admitting that her mom’s failed marriages triggered her and she felt like she was losing her own individuality amongst all the traditional options. When Sutton tries on a dress that Oliver picked out for her for the Scarlet shoot, she realises she can still make her own path amongst all the traditions. Speaking of forging her own path and expressing individuality, Sutton comes up with an idea to make Carly feel better about the whole uniform thing – she convinces Oliver to let Carly turn the guest room into her own room and let her pick how she wants to decorate it. Carly quips ‘if wearing it will help me be as amazing as Sutton, I’ll do it.’ Aww!

Also Oliver related – can we talk about the moments between him and Jacqueline this episode? We loved how he had her back and was looking out for her! When she finally shared with him the truth about her marriage and he told her ‘I got you’, we were all for it!
