Women of the Week

Women of the Week

By  |

If it were any other year we’d be a few weeks into the new Fall TV season by now, but instead this is 2020 and we’ve just got to wait a little while longer for fresh TV to start up. It’s not an awful thing though. While we patiently wait for many of our favorite shows to return, it’s given us a chance to rewatch some classic shows or finally delve into shows that we kept meaning to watch but never really had a chance to until now. With that in mind, after a few months of unintended hiatus, we’ve started back up our regular Women of the Week. Come delve in and see what we’ve been watching. Let us know your thoughts in the comments too!

NOMINATED BY MELISSA: Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles on Rizzoli & Isles

I’m rewatching Rizzoli & Isles right now and remembering what a spectacular example of female friendship we had in the two leads. Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander played their relationship pitch perfectly. The show started with the characters being acquainted but not particularly close, frustrated with each other’s very different ways of thinking and acting, yet willing to find common ground and respect the other person’s point of view. Out of that grew one of the best relationships on television, both as friends and co-workers. You can feel the warmth, the amused exasperation, the occasional hurt, the worry, the strength, the love – everything that makes up a real life friendship is communicated authentically. I never looked into the actors’ off-screen relationship but on-screen, I believe that their characters’ care deeply about each other.

Nominated by Ange: Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Kelsey Asbille as Monica Dutton Long on Yellowstone

Yellowstone has been on my to-watch list for awhile and once I finally got around to starting it, I binged through all three seasons within two weeks. The upside to binging is seeing the level of character development on a show. Beth Dutton and Monica Dutton-Long are two very different characters, yet two strong women with great conviction in their beliefs. Reilly’s Beth Dutton starts off the show as very brazen with a devil-may-care attitude, but for all her flaws, boy is she smart! By the end of season three, sure she’s a little softer than when we first met (a brutal attack towards the end of season two is a contributing factor to this) but she’s still fierce, a fighter and protective of those she loves.

On the flipside, Asbille‘s Monica Dutton-Long started off as Kacee Dutton’s wife and a school teacher on the local reservation. As her husband became drawn back into his estranged family’s world, she had no qualms about leaving him or creating better opportunities for herself and her son. Thankfully the pair reunited and although they are now a part of the Dutton world, Monica isn’t afraid to voice her opinion or fight for causes that she believes in, even at the risk of danger. Towards the end of season two, these two women finally start sharing scenes together and develop a mutual respect of one another and an understanding that they have more in common than they think.
