Women of the Week

By  |

We’ve been immersing ourselves into summer TV and this past week has given us a range of strong performances from women, including some seriously talented young women. Read on to find out who our latest Women of the Week picks are!

Nominated by Rueben: Kristin Kreuk as Joanna Chang in Burden of Truth on The CW

This week’s episode of Burden of Truth (as aired on The CW in the US, that is) focused on Joanna and her partner Billy (in and out of the courtroom) dealing with the fall out from not getting a class certification for their current case as well as figuring out that the corruption in Millwood’s family services goes much, much deeper than believed.  She learned a few episodes ago that she was pregnant, blurting out the news to Billy (the baby daddy), but not yet coming to terms with it all.  She may still be in quite a bit of denial, but she finally broke down to Billy about her deep doubts and fears.  It was a tender moment between the couple, as well as a milestone for Joanna to actually show that she is human.  Kristin made Joanna’s concerns and worries about her own lack of abilities so real and palpable.  Hopefully this will also be a small turning point for her as a person.

Nominated by Roz: The Girls of  The Baby-Sitters Club on Netflix

(Sophie Grace as Kristy Thomas, Malia Baker as Mary Anne Spier, Momona Tamada as Claudia Kishi, Shay Rudolph as Stacey McGill and Xochitl Gomez as Dawn Schafer)

Is it bad I want to nominate all the girls from The Baby-Sitters Club?
The updates to 2020 felt right, while still feeling like the books. Diverse casting of the girls and issues that are topical (did I get teary over the trans kid? Yes, I did. Did Mimi’s internment flashbacks hurt, yes?)

Seconded by Ange:

I’m with you, Roz, on this nomination! Reading The Baby-Sitters Club books was such an important staple of my childhood. (In case you were wondering, Claudia was my fave when I was a kid and continues to be in this update.)  I even still have the books packed away in a box somewhere because I couldn’t bear to part with them. I remember the ’90s TV series and the 1995 movie, so when Netflix announced that they were doing a reboot of this beloved franchise I was a little apprehensive of how this was going to turn out. Just one episode in, I was pleasantly surprised – the new series stays true to the books but updates it to suit modern times with both casting choices and topics explored. It’s nice to know that the BSC still remains a group of positive young role models and are around for a new generation.

Unlike a lot of youth shows, the cast are appropriately cast and feel like the 13-year-olds that they should be. There is no weak link in this group of young girls, but the particular stand outs to me where Sophie Grace as leader and founder Kristy and Momona Tamada as the artistic and junk food loving Claudia Kishi. Tamada also happened to play the younger version of Lara Jean in this year’s To All The Boys P.S. I Still Love You. These two definitely ones to watch!
