Good Witch Finale Recap: “The Bird”

By  |

The season finale of Good Witch‘s sixth season aired on the Hallmark Channel last night. The episode focused not only on the Merriwick-Davenport curse and Adam and Stephanie’s relationship but also the housewarming gala at Tinsdale Manor (formerly Roderick Davenport’s home).

Cassie and Sam

The episode opened with Sam serving Cassie breakfast in bed and her feeling slightly down about her time as a teacher at the local university coming to an end, but that tender moment had to end as Sam had to rush off to the hospital as usual.

Once at the hospital, Sam learned from Grant, the new hospital administrator, that he had over 40 unused vacation days that he needed to take. Despite his bulking, Sam was made to take a 2-week vacation. Taking time off to relax is not typical for Sam; and even though Cassie tried to get him into meditation (in the newly completed meditation room at Grey House – thank you Joy and Donna!), he preferred doing some putting practice instead. The couple even took a little time at the pottery wheel (I was anticipating a slight homage to Ghost, but that might have been too racy for Good Witch – wink!).

Adam and Stephanie

Their time together was waning, as Adam would be leaving for his mission in South Africa very soon; and they were both starting to feel concern over their long-distance relationship. At first it seemed that Adam was going to propose to Stephanie – he even showed Sam the ring he bought – but just before leaving for the big housewarming gala and Martha’s mansion, they both came to the agreement that they were doing what they’re “supposed to do” rather that what they “should do.” In the end, they broke up – despite it being very clear that they love each other very much.

Joy and Donna

Their work on Martha’s mansion was complete – except for some wet paint in one hallway and the wrong sized chandelier being delivered – and it was time for their next project. Donna took it upon herself to bid on a BIG estate in Vermont for their business, unfortunately telling Joy that bit of news after the fact. Joy was reticent to make a decision about leaving, as she was feeling the pull of staying in Middleton. Needless to say, she wanted some time to consider. It was obvious that Donna wanted to take the job if their bid was selected.

As it turned out, they were selected for the Vermont job and Donna couldn’t wait to tackle the work. In fact, when Martha made mention that she had a friend in Middleton who wanted Joy and Donna to handle her family home’s remodel, Donna told Martha they weren’t available (even though Joy had yet to make her decision). To make matters worse, Donna didn’t come clean with Joy about the Middleton job offer, telling Joy to “sleep on it,” as she had to decide the next day about taking the Vermont job.

Abigail and Donovan

The Merriwick-Davenport curse wasn’t backing off nor was the cracking in the ruby lessening, and despite all efforts Donovan and Abigail couldn’t solve the riddle of the last clue being “hidden in plain sight.” So rather than letting the curse ruin their relationship, Abigail insisted they just get on with their lives together, no matter what. Despite not wanting to provide flowers for Martha’s housewarming (the mansion was owned by Roderick Davenport, the genesis of the curse, after all) and neither she nor Donovan were going to attend; but once they decided to act against the curse, she made beautiful flower arrangements for the gala and they attended the event as a happy couple.

But leave it to Sam – who loves to solve puzzles – to have a moment of clarity. As he watched Tom and Martha looking through the telescope during the gala, he had a light bulb moment, which led them back to the Merriwick painting that was the basis for their tableau vivant. Sam was convinced that the final clue had something to do with the spyglass depicted in that painting. At first it seemed that the spyglass was directed toward the man standing behind the screen in the corner of the painting; but in actuality, it was directed at a small bird figurine: a figurine that was identical to the bird owned by Joy, which had been passed down to her by her mother. Joy shared that the bird had been passed down from generation to generation on her side of the family.

At first that didn’t lead them anywhere because there were no markings on the bird figurine, but then Joy was inspired by the stone left to Cassie by her mentor Olympia (a descendant of the Connelly’s – who helped Roderick enact that curse). Joy broke the bird into pieces, and what was contained inside? The missing diamond ring!

The Music Box

With the diamond ring now in hand, it was time to bring all the jewels together. Martha – with Donovan’s mom Dotty in tow – rushed the music box to Grey House so Donovan and Abigail could place the three jewels in their allotted drawers. With the jewels in place, the drawers closed simultaneously, but nothing happened UNTIL the gears started to move in reverse and a secret drawer opened revealing the engagement ring that Roderick Davenport had used to propose to Patience Merriwick: the proposal for which she refused, for which brought about the 200-year-old curse.

Taking that as a sign, Donovan removed the ring from its hiding spot, took Abigail by the hand and proposed to her. She said YES, and was finally able to say “I love you” to Donovan – something she’d been unable to say even though she repeatedly wanted to say it. Congrats to the love birds!!

The Mystery of the Purple Bags

Near the beginning of the episode, Cassie was surprised (which is not usual for her) by the appearance of a small velvet purple drawstring bag laying on the counter at Bell, Book and Candle. The bag was filled with dirt and Cassie had no idea how or why it was at her shop. At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Abigail also received the same kind of bag on the counter in her home and Joy found an identical bag inside her truck. When Abigail and Joy asked Cassie, “what does it mean,” Cassie said “I have no idea.”

Our new mystery has been announced…who left those bags for the Merriwick women? Why did Cassie’s bag have dirt inside? What do Abigail’s and Joy’s bag have hidden inside? Where will these surprises lead them?

There is no official word yet on whether the Hallmark Channel has renewed Good Witch for a 7th season, but given how popular the show is it’s hard to believe it won’t be back for another season at some point in time.
