Supernatural at Nerd HQ 2014: Nice Boys Doing Occasionally Bad Things

By  |

For the second year in a row, Nerd HQ ended its four days of festivities with a panel featuring cast from the CW show Supernatural, this year hosted by Aisha Tyler (Archer, Who’s Line is it Anyway?), as regular host Zachary Levi was ready to pass out from a long weekend.

As can only happen around four men who spend too much time together, this Nerd HQ panel devolved into madness shortly after it began. Included in the panel were series regulars Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester), Misha Collins (Castiel), Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) and Mark Sheppard (Crowley). Following a morning where Collins offered coffee to fans in line and Padalecki and Ackles offered Funko Pop! toys to the first fans in line – acts that make them Nice Boys in my heart – this panel demonstrates how sometimes nice boys can say very bad things about each other.

Below are the high points, but it should be noted that this panel is best viewed in its entirety.

  • To prove just how goofy all these men are, the panel tried to mimic Collins’ twitter pose while he live-tweets during the show itself. What followed was what can only be called a very sad T-Rex impression by everyone involved.
  • When another fan dissed Sheppard’s accent as being hard to understand, both Padalecki and Tyler ran off stage to high-five her. Of course the woman who dissed Sheppard then had difficulty articulating her actual question, which was about fan art. What followed were prime examples of bizarre concepts: a velvet painting of Crowley and Castiel in a bath together and a Gishwish-created portrait of Ackles made of Skittles (a fan showed the photo to a curious Tyler, who then messaged it to herself).
  • A question about another bodyswap episode led Padalecki to do an impression of early Castiel that then turned into Padalecki attempting to be a crow with flapping wings.
  • Apersonal favorite question from the audience, someone asked what the casts’ favorite monsters were growing up. Padalecki mentioned a villain called the Shadow Man. Collins mentioned that he didn’t have one that was in a book, but it was a monster called a matzah monster that his father created when Collins was introduced to Passover as a kid because Passover didn’t have anything as interesting as the Easter Bunny. Sheppard was creeped out by the ventriloquist from Magic.
  • When a Facebook fan wanted to know about crossover potentials, Collins said Hawaii 5-0 so they could shoot someplace warm. Sheppard suggested SuperWhoLock – which then required an explanation. Padelecki wanted to join Smallville (how would you explain why Ackles’ face might be there twice?) and then Ackles wanted to go to The Vampire Diaries so that Sam and Dean could kill all the vampires of Mystic Falls. Tyler wanted to bankroll the idea of that crossover with a few of the cast from The Vampire Diaries.

Supernatural returns to the CW on Tuesday, October 7 for its 10th season.
