THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Career, Love and Personal in ‘Snow Day’

By  |

A blizzard hit NYC in last night’s episode of THE BOLD TYPE, resulting in the characters having to wait it out. Of course this created plenty of twists in all things career, love and personal! Let’s dive into the episode (which was directed by none other than Melora Hardin, who plays Jacqueline), shall we?

CAREER

Jane’s vertical is hours away from launching and she’s both excited and nervous. The nerves outweigh the excitement when star writer Scott files his story and it’s not what Jane was hoping for. She finds the piece boring and struggles to talk to him about it. After seeking advice from her besties, she tries to sugarcoat a conversation with him but he senses her awkwardness and tells the newbie manager that he’s a professional and can handle her criticism. Relieved, Jane shares her thoughts and he agrees to rewrite it. Take two and Jane doesn’t like what he’s written. Rather than working it out with him, she takes it upon herself to rewrite his piece. So much so that when he reads it, he politely tells her he doesn’t want the byline. Up until now, Jane has resisted asking mentor and boss Jacqueline for advice as she was determined to handle it on her own now that she too is a boss lady. Jane ends up caving and calling Jacqueline for advice, which is of course helpful and opens up a honest conversation between Jane and her new protege. Third time is a charm with Scott rewriting the story once again.

Elsewhere in the Scarlet office, Sutton is trying to prepare for a photoshoot she has the next day but due to the snowstorm that has hit the city, the showrooms that Sutton was meant to get outfits from are all closed. This causes her to get a little creative using what she can find in the building. A further curveball is thrown when the power goes out right in the middle of when Sutton was customising a piece on her sewing machine and she then accidentally ruins it! Did we also mention that Sutton is also trying to juggle work with her newfound pregnancy symptoms? Things work out in the end but it does leave her questioning whether she can do it all.

Over at The Belle, where Kat is now bartending, who shows up at her new workplace but none other than RJ Safford’s daughter, Ava, whom Kat previously clashed with. In typical Kat fashion, she can’t refrain from making remarks at her now customer and ends up getting fired. That is until Ava steps in and then gets Kat her job back. She also tells Kat to work on her Bloody Marys because she’ll be sticking around the club. Oh boy.

LOVE

It’s official, Sutton and Richard are having a baby! Papa to be is pretty excited and also protective. He escorts Sutton to work in the wild weather and decides to stick around. Being super hovering while she works, Sutton sends Richard to get her a ginger tea and he ends up slipping on the way back and hurting his knee. Later, when Sutton thinks her husband (wow, still weird to be writing that!) is knocked out on medication, she confesses her fears about being a mom and juggling the pregnancy with her career. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. Richard hears her and comforts her. Oh and they discuss baby names! Ruby could be a contender.

While things are sweet with Sutton and Richard, her boss Oliver is dealing with feelings of his own. His ex – Carly’s dad – is now out of rehab and has visitation rights to see her. Oliver isn’t keen to see him and hopes for a quick drop off. Of course the pesky blizzard gets in the way of that and leaves them all trapped together. Although Oliver is resistant to believe that his ex has changed, the extra time together does make him realize that maybe has changed and can be there for Carly. At the end of the episode, Oliver admits to his ex that he can support him spending time with Carly, but he’s not quite ready to let him back in and be around him yet.

Elsewhere in the office, after they clear the air and get candid with each other about their family histories, Jane and Scott then share a drink in Jacqueline’s office to toast the launch of the vertical. Afterwards at The Belle, Kat and Sutton tease her about her hottie employee, causing Jane to protest that she’s his boss but the girls note that she’s not denying their claims though. Watch this space!

Last about not least in the romance department, it looks like Jacqueline and Ian are working things out if being in bed together is any indication. There is a moment of awkwardness on her behalf when Ian is reading an article in The New Yorker, which is written by her ex, Miles.

PERSONAL

Sutton tells the girls at the start of the episode that she’s pregnant. They’re naturally excited  and Jane claims that she’ll be the “fun aunt”. At the end of the episode, Kat announces that it’s official – her parents are renting out her apartment so she’ll be taking up Jane on her offer to move in. As a former roommate of Jane’s, Sutton’s advice to Kat is to make sure she labels her vibrator. Ha!
