Women of the Week
We’re one month into the new year and there’s no short supply of outstanding performances on our screen. Read on to find out who are our latest Women of the Week picks…
Nominated by Roz: Gina Rodriguez as Carmen Sandiego on Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego
I want to highlight Gina Rodriguez for her voice work as Carmen Sandiego in the new Netflix cartoon. She gave someone who I always imagined as a villain with depth and made me think I’ve misunderstood her for nearly thirty years.
Nominated by Melissa: Jameela Jamil as Tahani al Jamil on The Good Place
My pick for this week is Jameela Jamil. She showed us how much Tahani has grown as a person over the course of how ever many years she’s been in the Good/Bad/Medium Place/IHOP/Back on Earth. The way she handled John’s presence and catty remarks, realizing that they were meant to drag her back down to her worst self and choosing the high road, was really Tahani as her best self. Kudos to Jameela for giving us this character development without Tahani’s trademark melodrama.
Nominated by Ange: Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop on The Good Place
Jumping on THE GOOD PLACE train, my pick for this week is Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, who put me through so many emotions in the season finale. First we saw Eleanor step up and take charge when Michael had his meltdown. She kept the team calm and remained optimistic that they could outsmart the bad place crew. Then there was her despair and refusal to believe that there was no other option to Chidi getting his mind wiped when his ex showed up. Don’t get me started on her and Chidi’s last night as they watched their love story play out as a movie! As much as she put on a brave face, her conversation with Janet the next morning about what was the point to everything gave me all the feels and I admired her game face when she finally went to greet Chidi who now no longer has any memory of her. Like I said, so many emotions in this episode!
