Woman of the Week

By  |

Now that our fave shows are starting to return from holiday hiatus, so is our weekly editions of Women of the Week. Who is kickstarting our picks for 2019? Read on and find out!

Nominated by Melissa: Halston Sage as Lt. Alara Kitan on The Orville

This week was the apparent swan song for Alara as she made the difficult choice to leave The Orville and return to her home planet to spend time with her family. Alara has been one of my favorite characters on the show from the beginning, so I’m sorry to see her go. But what a send off! Halston gave us so much in this episode, portraying Alara’s hurt and sadness over her family’s, especially her father’s, behavior, her anger, confusion, and borderline hopelessness after her injury, the determination and skill that made her a superior security officer, and an emotional farewell to her second family. I was particularly touched by her interactions with Seth Macfarlane’s Captain Mercer. They obviously hold a lot of affection for each other in a mentor/mentee or big brother/little sister sense, and I can’t help but wonder what stories we could have had if that had been explored further. I’ll miss you, Alara Kitan. And I’m eager to see what Halston does next!
