The character development of Party of Five‘s Lucia Acosta does not get the credit that it deserves. It may have taken Lucia a while to realise that acting out wasn’t going to help her family’s situation, but she’s now channelling her energy into something more proactive, fighting to help those who may have trouble fighting for themselves. This week she organised a fundraiser for the immigrants rights group and even took the stage to share her own story about her parents’ deportation. There wasn’t even the sound of a pin dropping when Lucia spoke about visiting her parents while they were being detained and the awful conditions that she witnessed. Everyone was captivated by her words, this viewer included. Lucia’s speech represents so many real life experiences today and as I watched Lucia speak her truth, I forgot that she was just a character on TV. It would have been easy to turn that heartfelt monologue into something preachy that we’ve all heard before, but there was something about Emily Tosta’s performance had me convinced that Lucia was a real person sharing her experiences with me and I couldn’t help but listen.
