THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Career, Love and Personal in ‘Legends of the Fall Issue’
Hushed discussions in the fashion closet and impromptu girl trips, oh how we’ve missed you! Freeform’s THE BOLD TYPE returned with its fourth season on Thursday night, so let’s take a look at how the new season kicked off by taking a look at three essential topics covered on this show – career, love and personal.
CAREER
At the end of season three, Jane, Kat and Sutton walked into the Scarlet offices to find removalists taking away furniture and Jacqueline nowhere in sight. After sending to print a revised version of the Fall Issue (one that Safford head, RJ, did not approve of) Jacqueline was fired and Patrick promoted to her position. Considering that Patrick’s first brilliant idea in his new position is to do a taste test on rose, we’re not surprised that our bold trio weren’t going to let this new chain of command go ahead without a fight. Their colleagues Alex, Sage and Andrew were also looking to the girls to make the situation right. Things aren’t looking great at first – Kat gets called into RJ’s office and instructed to produce a particular message on the socials. He then reveals that since the issue is not representative of middle America and their advertisers, the issue is being pulled and won’t ever be released. Even Richard tells Sutton that he tried to speak with RJ, but the man was set in his ways. Meanwhile Jane goes to see Jacqueline hoping that she will fight, but Jacqueline has accepted her fate, believing that at least she went out on a high and an inspirational issue.
When the girls find out the issue has been pulled, they decide to travel to New Jersey to where the printers are to get their hands on some copies of the issue, in the hope that seeing the hard copy of the issue will inspire Jacqueline to fight for her job. Thankfully the security guard at the printers turns out to be a big Scarlet fan and saw the new issue and loved it. She turns a blind eye while they grab copies. The girls also end up delivering the mags to people involved in creating the issue and then the following morning, they discover that the issue was somehow leaked to the press. They’re not sure who leaked it, but if the copies get traced back to them, there will be serious legal ramifications. Uh-oh.
However, the leak works in their favor, with people talking about it and threatening to cancel their subscriptions. At a board meeting, Kat argues that this new change will be good for business and one of the magazine’s biggest advertisers comes into the meeting and admits that he may have had his reservations but he now agrees with Kat. In light of this meeting, RJ now has to swallow his pride and ask Jacqueline to come back. After some negotiating, which includes her employees’ jobs being safe (aka Kat, Jane and Sutton not being fired for breaking and entering the printers premises), she agrees to come back. Scarlet, however will no longer be print – just Digital, so she will be co-running it with Patrick…or so she thinks. Patrick knows who the true boss of Scarlet is and resigns. He’s off to India before he figures out his next step.
LOVE
Sutton and Richard are still going strong; he supports her through the Scarlet scandals (although he was concerned about the fact that the girls broke and entered when there were cameras everywhere) and she supports his decision to take a sabbatical from work to pursue his passion project in San Francisco. Kat is concerned for Adena, who Jacqueline had hired right before she was fired. After some radio silence, Adena reaches out to let Kat know that she’s fine and is on assignment, but also needs some space. While Ryan cuts his book tour short and is back in town. He and Jane don’t really discuss more about his cheating from last season. She may have taken him back, but we’re sure the wounds are still there. Alex reveals that he and Angie (Kat’s social media junior) are no longer seeing each other because she went on THE BACHELOR! Last but not least, thinking that Jacqueline would no longer be working, her husband expressed a desire to go back to work, which she okayed and so he started putting out feelers. When she reveals over the phone that she’s going back to Scarlet, you can tell that he’s not impressed, especially when a promising job opportunity has been presented to him. She’s not fussed because at the time she believed that she and Patrick would be running Scarlet together, so we’ll see how this situation plays out now that Patrick is gone.
PERSONAL
We get a bit of extra insight into THE BOLD TYPE characters through the way they handle stress. Sutton stress steals/borrows from the fashion closet. Now that she’s a lady of leisure, Jacqueline enjoys a glass of wine in the morning. Andrew has serious anxiety attacks over Jacqueline leaving and what his own future holds.
THE BOLD TYPE airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Freeform.
