THE BOLD TYPE: Five times the characters rose to the occasion in 3×02 “Plus It Up”

By  |

In the latest episode of THE BOLD TYPE,  we learned, or rather reaffirmed, that you don’t underestimate the staff at Stafford publishing. Many of the show’s main players were underestimated and more than proved themselves by the episode’s end. Join us as we break down these moments from the latest episode…

Pinstripe Ryan

Jane and Pinstripe Ryan are still in the fun stage of their relationship and Jane is determined to keep it that way despite the fact that she’s about to start her egg extraction process. Spooked by her experience with ex Ben, Jane pushes Ryan away and tries to keep him in the dark about what’s happening with her. Despite her efforts, the former playboy comes back and genuinely wants to be involved. Sure things got heavy and weird when she let her last boyfriend become involved with her medical situation, but he’s different to Ben. Aww, Ryan, just when we thought you couldn’t charm us more than you possibly could, there you go!

Jacqueline

Early in the episode, Jacqueline and Patrick quietly butt heads over trying to gain access to Cardi B for print and digital, as it’s a case of one or the other. When Kat announces her plans for queer prom, Patrick tells Jacqueline that she should come because she’d get a kick out of it. Imagine the new Digital Editor’s surprise when the Editor-in-Chief arrives with Sasha Velour from RuPaul’s Drag Race – a guest that Patrick was trying to get and failed! He’s in disbelief that Jacqueline knows Sasha, to which Jane points out that it’s Jacqueline and she knows everyone. Turns out that Jacqueline knows Sasha from way back and even hired Sasha as a nanny back in the day. It’s clear that Patrick realizes that he shouldn’t underestimate Jacqueline and we hope that it’s a mistake that he won’t make again.

Richard

This week’s episode opens up with Sutton moving out of her and Jane’s apartment to move in with Richard. Being so busy with work, she hasn’t had time to do her laundry and is determined to do it herself despite Richard’s offer to have his housekeeper do it with his laundry. At the end of the episode, Richard proves himself to be more than a rich pretty boy when he does Sutton’s laundry himself. Turns out, he learned how to do his own laundry while he was at boarding school and is actually pretty good at it, sharing tricks he learned with Sutton. Aww, aren’t you a catch Richard Ricardo?

Sutton

She might not be able to do her own laundry on time (love her ‘BITCH DO YOUR LAUNDRY’ reminder on her phone!), but Sutton showed us that she can be a boss bitch (even if she doesn’t get the recognition for it) when Oliver goes MIA. Between smoothing out his mistakes and trying to rectify the situation (with more budget friendly ways no less!), Sutton not only pulls off a successful shoot without her mentor but she also has the confidence to confront him about leaving her in the lurch. Yes, he had a good reason, but even before she knew the reason it was also good to see Sutton show that she’s not a doormat who’s going to do all the work for him.

Kat

When Kat finds out one of the two lesbian bars in town is closing down, she first seeks out the local councilman to try and sway him and then throws a queer prom benefit when those efforts are futile. It’s quite impressive how quickly Kat is able to put together the event, but unfortunately they’re only able to raise $20,000 of the $42,000 target. Even the councilman arrives at the even and Kat tries to convince him to help them find a way to keep the bar open, but when it becomes clear that he has no interest in trying to help save the bar, Kat looks into who is opponent is in the next election. It looks like Kat has found a new candidate to support!
