THE BOLD TYPE: Game Changers from 3×03 “Stroke of Genius”

By  |

There was a lot of personal turmoil for the main players of Freeform’s THE BOLD TYPE this week, which lead to some big changes being made. Let’s break them down..

Kat gets political

At the end of last week’s episode we saw Kat look into her councilman’s opponent. This week she wastes no time in volunteering her time to help with Linda Zephyr’s campaign. Linda has a lot of opinions but has a bit of trouble engaging public attention. Linda’s campaign manager, Tia, is happy to have Kat on board, especially when she discovers that Kat is Scarlet’s social media manager and therefore well versed in gathering attention. Unfortunately not even all Kat’s social media management can help Linda engage with the crowd at a rally. Noticing the disinterested crowd, Kat takes the stage and tries to connect with the crowd, urging them not to be complacent about voting and having their say. The next day, Kat shows up to Linda’s office to discover that she has pulled out of the race. Tia and Linda have an idea though… Kat should replace Linda and run against the councilman instead! We all know that Kat likes a good challenge, so the councilman better watch out!

Alex gets a reality check

When a #MeToo piece written by one of Alex’s college friends, Kristen, goes viral, he pitches a story of interviewing her about it. Patrick loves it and wants it for digital rather than print. The piece was about Kristen’s experience with reluctantly sleeping with a guy when she didn’t really want to because he was badgering her and she was worried about her career since he had connections.. When Alex meets with her and praises her for speaking up, telling her that men need to be held accountable. Kristen admits that she was surprised to hear from him seeing as the guy in the story was based on him and a couple of other guys she hooked up with. Nice guy Alex is stunned by this revelation and it leads him to question himself as he certainly doesn’t remember the encounter that way. Alex later talks it out with the girls in an attempt to wrap his head around the whole situation. He initially tells Patrick that there is no story and that he won’t be writing the piece, only to later change his mind and write a piece that outs him as Jeff. The girls are concerned about what this will do to Alex’s career. Kat points out that stories tend to spiral and with Alex being a black man, that just adds an extra layer to the story, whether he likes it or not. Alex also speaks with Jacqueline, who tells him that she’ll support him no matter what he decides and that outrage culture should not be the driving force of editorial decisions. In the end, Alex publishes the story and as predicted there is some backlash in the comments, but Kristen also reaches out to him and thanks him for being an ally.

Sutton contemplates a career change

When a model arrives for a shoot and can’t fit into her address, a pressed for time Sutton is forced to improvise and ends up altering the designer piece that the model is wearing so that it fits. When the designer finds out, she’s not exactly impressed that the fashion assistant decided to add “a touch of playful geometry” to her production line but begrudgingly admits that it looks good. Sutton used to sell her own clothes when she was in high school and stopped doing it when she started working at Scarlet. However this incident, coupled with Kat assigning her the task of updating Linda Zephyr’s blazer into something more attractive, reignites Sutton’s creative passions. At the end of the episode, she confesses to Oliver (who earlier in the episode revealed that he was grooming Sutton to take over his job one day) that she thinks she wants to be a designer. Surprisingly he is supportive and gives her the advice to continue working with him and build relationships and networks rather than completely jumping ship right away. After all Vera Wang worked at Vogue for 17 years before jumping ship. He even offers to help her get into a exclusive fashion boot camp that a friend of his runs. Aww!

Jane spices up her relationship

It’s almost time for Jane’s egg extraction, which means her two weeks sabbatical of no drinking, no carbs and no sex is nearly over. It looks like Ryan had a bit of trouble making it through the two weeks when Jane realizes he was watching porn on her computer when she wasn’t around. Thanks to  Sutton’s skills, Jane sees what Ryan is in to and after realizing she’s a bit vanilla when it comes to sexual experiences, again with Sutton’s help, Jane gets pointers on how to spice up her sex life. Sutton has no qualms about sharing porn links that she enjoys watching with Richard with Jane. In typical Jane fashion, she does analyze what’s happening on the screen while she’s watching with Ryan but it does help in spicing things up and she does end up going all dominatrix on Ryan once she gets the all clear from the doctor. Baby Jane is growing up!

THE BOLD TYPE airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Freeform.
