ONE CHICAGO Winter Premiere Moments
The ONE CHICAGO fall finales left us with a lot of cliffhangers in 2019. Finally CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D. all returned tonight to deliver us some answers and resolutions. Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen tonight’s episodes, “Guess It Doesn’t Matter Anymore”, “Hold Our Ground” and “Mercy”!
CHICAGO MED
April tells Ethan…
April has been agonising for the last six weeks about kissing Crockett and with Ethan due home, she’s freaking out about telling him. Crockett tells her they kissed for like three seconds, so is that really something Ethan needs to know. I appreciate that he’s being cool about this and not giving her a hard time or making things uncomfortable for her. She decides that Crockett has a point and yeah maybe Ethan doesn’t need to know about the kiss. Then Ethan returns home a day early and proposes! She tears up and pauses, before telling him that there’s something she needs to tell him. She tells him about the test she had before he shipped out and that it’s unlikely that she can have kids. He tells her that he doesn’t care and still wants to marry her and she accepts.
The tension between Will and Natalie continues…
As expected, things are awkward between Natalie and Will. They’re in the locker room when she tells him that she’d like them to be friends again. He politely accepts, but I can’t help but wonder if he just said it to escape the awkwardness in the room. He doesn’t get very far as Maggie pokes her head into the room to put them on a case together. The case involves a child and a junkie mother, who Will treated four years ago and she claims is at fault for her addiction. Will doesn’t remember her but feels guilty and wants to get the mother clean before child services step in. However, Natalie speaks with the child and senses that they don’t have the full story, so she calls in child services. The mother thinks Will betrayed her and leaves. Will is not impressed with Natalie’s actions and it leads to yet another awkward encounter in the locker room. This time, Will is pointedly ignoring Natalie. As he prepares to leave the hospital, a patient is wheeled in and he is called on to help – it’s the junkie mother and she dies of an OD. Natalie looks on as Will tries to save the woman, knowing that it’s going to be hard for them to come back from this latest situation. Side note, did any eagle eyed Chihards notice that the junkie was played by former CHICAGO JUSTICE star Joelle Carter? (She played Antonio’s colleague, Laura.) I actually didn’t realize it was her at first!
Some hope for Maggie and Ben…
Following his measles infection, Ben is doing much better. Maggie is about to undergo radiation and on her way, the oncologist stops the pair to speak with Ben. It turns out that whatever treated his infection, also affected his cancer cells as he is now in remission! He is understandably overjoyed but then feels guilty since Maggie is still in treatment. She tells him not to feel bad and if anything, this good news gives her hope for her own health. Still, he doesn’t want to celebrate his latest diagnosis yet – not until he and Maggie can celebrate their health together. Aww.
The mourning process begins for Dr Charles…
CeeCee has sadly passed and Dr Charles is going through the motions, visiting her monument and then going to work. He’s trying to keep a low profile at work when medical student Elsa Curry visits him in his office to get his thoughts on a case. He gives her his clinical opinion, but there is a sense that she is disappointed that he doesn’t consult the patient in person. Later on, the med student’s diagnosis is proven wrong and she beats herself up about it. Dr Charles tells her not to be too hard on herself and we can see his mentoring self start to return. Then at a colleague’s retirement party later that night, Dr Charles takes to the stage to participate in karaoke and sings a sad song about loss.
CHICAGO FIRE
Severide escapes…
Surprisingly Severide’s encounter with the arsonist is done by the end of the opening scene. He and the guy struggle as the guy lights a flare. Flames start and the guy gets trapped but Severide helps him and the two make it out of the building. As a result, Severide’s boss at OFI “fires” Severide – or at least that’s what the OFI head is going to tell Grissom as he can see that Severide should be transferred back to 51 to do what he does best. So you could say that Severide escapes both a fire lighting maniac and the OFI. Severide leaving OFI doesn’t stop colleague Wendy from texting him and showing up to ask for his help. Luckily he can see through her oh so friendliness and politely tells her that he’s going to concentrate on one thing and that’s being at 51. Ha! That’s good news for Kidd, who was noticing that Wendy was vibing on Severide but didn’t want to seem like a jealous girlfriend so she didn’t say anything.
Fighting friends…
Speaking of Kidd, she’s caught in the middle of some tension between Foster and Brett. It all seems innocent when Brett asks Foster to do inventory of the rig. A distracted Foster agrees but later on a call questions Brett’s judgement. She also does inventory on the rig and decides to rearrange things but when Brett politely tells her that they would need to clear it with the other shift paramedics first, Foster complain to Kidd that Brett is letting the PIC power get to her head. That night at Molly’s, Brett is sitting alone and shares with Kidd that something is up with Foster and that she doesn’t want to be social and decides to leave, just as Foster shows up. Foster follows her out and the pair argue. Brett is offended that Foster questioned her medical judgement and tells her that she chose the paramedic life and that unlike Foster, it wasn’t a backup plan or consolation prize. Ouch. The pair end up making up after a close call on shift the next day. Foster admits that she was being moody because she saw that her graduating class had a reunion and seeing the photos made her question what she is doing with her life.
Insight into Gallo…
When Boden announces that there have been changes that will see their block boundaries overlap with another firehouse, Firehouse 20, a normally chilled out Gallo, reacts quite dramatically. When his colleagues ask him about his outburst, he tells them that the medic at that firehouse is the worst and that they were in the academy together and the medic was super competitive and Gallo couldn’t deal with them. When 20 show up to a call that 51 are on, Gallo’s friends are surprised to discover that the worst paramedic is actually a bold and beautiful female paramedic. Ritter starts ribbing Gallo about the paramedic and suspects he has a crush, which he fervently denies. At the end of shift at Molly’s, Gallo accidentally runs into the paramedic and spills a drink on her. One minute he’s trying to help clean her up and the next they’re back at his place getting hot and heavy. Something tells us that this isn’t going to be a one time thing…
Mouch’s Mission…
One of the calls that 51 tends to this episode involves an overturned mail truck. Mouch laments the demise of the traditional communication method and “the chronic lack of respect for written correspondence”, something that Kidd teases him about. Back at 51, Mouch finds a letter stuck to his shoe but the recipient and sender are now unreadable. Mouch tries to get the postal office to help him but due to legalities, they won’t. Mouch ends up opening up to Ritter about how his dad used to travel a lot and that letters were how they got through the times that his father was away and he can’t help but feel like this letter is like that for someone out there and he just wants to get it to them. Ritter ends up being able to help and Mouch’s instincts were right – the letter is for a widow and was written by her late husband right before he died. Just another CHICAGO FIRE moment making us feel all the feels!
CHICAGO P.D.
Halstead survives!
We didn’t have any doubt because that would just be crazy if they killed Halstead off, but it was a nice relief to see him survive the shooting. It was a close call with the bullet hitting an artery but with MED‘s Dr Marcel operating on him, he was in good hands.
Upton’s near confession…
Not only does Upton camp out in the waiting room for Halstead to wake up because she knows that he’ll freak out when he wakes up because he hates needles (thank you writers for FINALLY giving us some fun facts about these characters, even if it is seven years later!), but when she is helping him get ready to leave she is about to admit something to him. It is a realization that she had while she was waiting for him to be okay, but what that realization is, we don’t know because we are interrupted by his phone ringing! Was Upton about to admit feelings for him? Looks like we’ll have to wait a little while longer to find out.
Burgess is keeping the baby!
Burgess has decided that she is going to keep the baby. That’s all we know for now as she wanted to talk to Ruzek about it after shift. Hopefully we’ll get to see that conversation or what came of it next episode!
Atwater’s brother is back
Remember when Atwater’s younger brother and sister were sent to Houston for their own protection a few seasons back? Well, imagine Atwater’s surprise when he discovers his brother is back in town while he’s working a case. Atwater is concerned that people will discover that his brother is back in town and try to hurt him but Voight assures him that his brother will be protected. This sounds a bit familiar to the storyline with Cruz and his brother in an earlier season of CHICAGO FIRE. It turns out Atwater’s brother, Jordan, is involved with a girl who is linked to a case Intelligence are working on. Things go from bad to worse when a body turns up and camera footage shows Jordan fleeing the scene with a gun. It turns out that Jordan was covering for his new girlfriend, but at the end of the episode when Atwater goes to meet him and he doesn’t show up, we’re a bit concerned about what potential dumb and in love act Jordan may have pulled or where he may be.
