14 Times We Reacted During The ONE CHICAGO Crossover Event

By  |

How epic was the ONE CHICAGO crossover event last week? There was plenty happening during the three hours of television and it was so seamless that we forgot whether we were watching an episode of  CHICAGO FIRE, CHICAGO MED or CHICAGO P.D.! There was a bit too much to cover so here are the top highlights from the “Infection” crossover that had us reacting, whether it be good or bad!

1. Seeing our fave first responders hanging out together while off duty

This much anticipated event didn’t waste any time establishing that it was a crossover. The opening scene saw a bunch of our fave ONE CHICAGO residents tailgating at the big Bears game. There was MED‘s Natalie Manning, P.D.‘s Kim Burgess, FIRE‘s Sylvie Brett and Stella Kidd all preparing to watch the game and heckling poor Kevin Atwater from P.D. to fix the TV. His colleague Hailey Upton was grabbing tamales from a food truck. While seeing FIRE‘s Matt Casey and P.D.’s Jay Halstead casually tossing a football about made us swoon and FIRE‘s Severide manning the grill gave us heart eyes. Too bad the good times were cut short when a stranger collapsed at the event!

2. Necrotizing fasciitis aka flesh eating disease is gross

We hope no one was eating while watching the crossover event because how gross were all the infection scenes? Like when Brett and Foster found the second victims decomposing in their home? Or how about when they showed the nasty blister like thing on Patient X’s back? *shudder* This definitely wasn’t the 4 in 1 million affected that Natalie originally suggested. I know this was all fictional, but I am officially wary of having any sort of open wound now. Props to the makeup and special effects teams of the ONE CHICAGO franchise for doing an awesome job with the very realistic looking infections!

3. The fire at Central Chicago University

The green flames were pretty insane! Also, maybe I’ve been watching way too much TV, but I was actually expecting the people trapped in the basement to emerge from the fire looking zombie-like….

4. Severide telling Kidd that he’s going to die an old man surrounded by THEIR kids and grandkids

#endgame. Just when we thought we couldn’t get more heart-eyed over Severide, he goes and says something sweet like this to Kidd after she’s shaken by the university lab fire. He really is stepping up this season like he promised in the season finale!

5. Chloe breaks up with Cruz… before he was going to propose!

While it looks like Severide and Kidd are in it for the long haul, the same can’t be said for Chloe and Cruz. It’s been a year and Cruz feels like life is short and that it’s time to propose to Chloe. Unbeknownst to him as he makes plans at an expensive restaurant, she’s having second thoughts about their relationship and ends up telling him that she needs a break… right before they’re meant to go to dinner! Where this even came from is beyond me! Poor Cruz, you’ve really got to feel for the poor guy. It’s been a rough couple of months losing his best friend and now his girlfriend. At least he had the case to momentarily distract him from his heartache…

6. Upton gets put into quarantine

CHICAGO MED- “Infection Part II” Episode 504 — Pictured: Tracy Spiridakos as Det. Hailey Upton — (Photo by: Liz SissonNBC)

Upton ends up being quarantined after going to question a suspect and the suspect collapses in her arms and blood ends up on Upton. The Intelligence cop ends up bonding with a 14-year-old girl named Amanda, who hasn’t had the easiest life and is trying to put on a brave face. As the two bond, Upton shares her story of becoming a cop and becoming inspired by Platt with Amanda. This takes place during the MED episode and I have to say, why is that we always seem to learn more about the P.D. characters during MED!  During the last crossover event, we learned more about Jay Halstead and his family history during one episode of MED than we did in six seasons of P.D...

7. The quarantined apartment residents revolting

Things did not look good when the residents of the apartment where the infection seemed to be coming from, decided to revolt against the authorities (no thanks to a particularly paranoid resident who kept yelling accusations and sparking fear in everyone else) and make a run from it from the quarantine area. Upton managed to convince Amanda to stay behind, but potentially infected patients on the run was not good. The PR guy from the mayor’s office then reprimanded Goodwin for allowing the revolt to happen. This guy is seriously the worst.

8. Will Halstead gets clocked in the head in the lab

Some of the scientists from the university lab agree to help Will and the CDC expert find a cure for the infection. Unbeknownst to them, one of the scientists is actually behind the epidemic and destroys the samples they were testing when everyone else leaves the room. Will returns to find him sabotaging the samples and the two end up in a fight where the rogue scientist knocks Will out by bashing a microscope across his head! His brother finds him but the scientist has gone on the run.

9. The mob at Mama Garcia’s demonstrating how horrible people can be

The sweet lady from the food truck at the start of the event? People are turning on her and accusing her of being involved in the bio-terrorism act. An angry crowd gather outside her restaurant yelling and defacing it. 51 go over to break it up and she is horrified that people could even think that she’s involved. Seeing how awful humanity can be hurt to watch.

10. Chicago: Ghost Town

With the infection causing fear around town, the mayor’s office doesn’t need to worry about having more first responders on the scene to help 51 control the crowd at the Oktoberfest parade. The city is an absolute ghost town outside! The shot of the FIRE and PD teams looking at the empty downtown Chicago streets was a super cool shot. In case you were wondering, the production team was able to close it off on a Sunday morning to get the shot.

11. Amanda gets infected

CHICAGO MED- “Infection Part II” Episode 504 — Pictured: (l-r) Torrey DeVitto as Dr. Natalie Manning, Tracy Spiridakos as Det. Hailey Upton — (Photo by: Liz SissonNBC)

Once Upton is given the all clear and is able to leave MED, Manning takes her place keeping Amanda company. Moments after Upton leaves, Amanda admits that she is feeling off and Manning rushes her up to get a CT. The bacteria is spreading at a rapid rate and straight after the CT, she’s rushed into surgery with Dr Marcel. Amanda nearly dies on the table, but having just had to amputate another victim (the trainee firefighter), Dr Marcel is determined not to have another loss on his hands and fights to save her. We get to see a more vulnerable side to him that shows that he does care about patients and isn’t a carefree guy that doesn’t worry about consequences. Thankfully, Amanda pulls through – we think it would have been too much if she died. The team needs a win!

12. The body that comes flying out of the window

CHICAGO P.D.- “Infection Part III” Episode 704 — Pictured: LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater — (Photo by: Matt DinersteinNBC)

Intelligence finally have a lead and are able to track down bad scientist guy. As they approach the location, a body comes flying out of a window from the multi-storey building above and lands smack bang on the pavement right in front of them! This guy is not messing around with seeking revenge…

13. Halstead faces off against the mad scientist

Realizing that the scientist has taken hostages and they’re running out of options to save the civilians, Halstead inserts himself into the situation and enters the room where the gun-wielding scientist and the hostages are. He drops his gun but sneakily keeps his phone on him and has the line open so Voight can hear what is happening. Inside the room, board members have already been infected with the bacteria and now the scientist wants to infect Jay too to prove a point. He hands the detective a knife to cut himself, which he does and just as the scientist orders him to spray the bacteria on the open wound, Upton takes a sniper shot from a nearby building to distract him so Voight can storm the room. We knew she and Voight would come through but it was nerve wracking watching Halstead go through that!

14. Burzek back on?

CHICAGO P.D.- “Infection Part III” Episode 704 — Pictured: (l-r) Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess, Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek — (Photo by: Matt DinersteinNBC)

It’s been a long couple of days and we’re not surprised that Burgess and Ruzek turn down Rojas’ invite to grab drinks after work in favor of having a quiet night in. What does surprise us is Ruzek asking Burgess to come to his and she agrees. Is this a stress reliever thing? Is this a one night stand? Will the once engaged couple reunite? We’ll have to hold on a bit longer for answers because that’s how the crossover event ends!

The ONE CHICAGO line up airs Wednesday nights on NBC; beginning with the CHICAGO MED, followed by CHICAGO FIRE and concluding with CHICAGO P.D..
