Women of the Week

By  |

Now that we’re well and truly into the fall season, the calibre of performances continues to rise. Which leading ladies impressed the Nice Girls this past week? Read on to find out!

Nominated by Rueben: Rachel Skarsten as Alice on Batwoman

She might be the villain of the story, but Alice in Batwoman (as played by Lost Girl alum Rachel Skarsten) is just a delight to watch. She is obviously out-of-her-mind crazy; but she knows that she is not afraid of it or anything else. There is obviously a lot of deep-seeded problems for this girl who was born Beth Kane, twin to Kate Kane (aka Batwoman), and at some point she and Kate are going to have a huge showdown. But, in the meantime, watching her torment her father and dealing with her inner demons has been quite interesting, and has added a unique level of entertainment to this dark series.

Nominated by Ange: Mandy Moore as Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us

I thought Mandy Moore on This Is Us was awesome this week, in particular the ’90s version of Rebecca post-Jack. The stand out scenes to me were when she tells where she tells the Big 3 teens to quit their whining and enjoy her dinner and then the scene with Miguel where she shared her concerns about not being able to fix her family. The depiction of a woman trying to keep her family together after losing an important pillar of the family but also her exasperation at her kids behaving like children when they are mature and old enough to know better, felt very real and on point.

Nominated by Ange: Camilla Luddington as Jo Karev on Grey’s Anatomy

This week I’m also nominating Camilla Luddington from Grey’s Anatomy. Luddington’s character, Jo Karev, started the season at a treatment facility to help shake her out of her depression that developed at the end of last season. A few episodes in, Karev is back at work and feeling confident and more like her old self. That is until this week when her therapist from the center is admitted to Grey Sloan for attempted suicide and throws Karev into a tailspin. In the present, Karev teeters between panic and trying to remain calm and professional. This is juxtaposed against the angry and in-denial Jo that we see in the flashbacks to her time at the facility. Kudos to both Luddington and the show’s writers for portraying both the progress and setbacks from dealing with depression and that it isn’t an easy fix.
