Women of the Week

By  |

The final week of February brought out pretty powerful performances, creating no shortage of picks in our latest edition of Women of the Week. Read on to see who we’re spotlighting from this past week…

Nominated by Karen: Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago-Peralta on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, she delivered a powerful performance in this week’s B99. Without being preachy, Amy detailed the struggles of being a woman in a male-oriented world. She admitted to her husband, Jake, an experience of harassment from her own past, and did it in a very moving and “real” way. I’d like to also give a runner-up nod to Andy Samberg as Jake, who was amazing as her very understanding and empathetic husband.

Nominated by Melissa: Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine

In a nuanced depiction of the ongoing trauma of sexual harassment and assault, Fumero infused Amy’s all-too-familiar story with authenticity and heartbreak. The way she told Amy’s #MeToo experience, not just of the assault but how she has doubted herself and her accomplishments ever since, was devastating. Beatriz directed this episode and showed off some outstanding storytelling instincts. I’m looking forward to seeing more from her behind the camera in addition to her engaging on-screen presence.

Thirded and Seconded by Ange

Fumero was fantastic in this episode! It’s not that often that there’s an opportunity on the show to dive into a more serious and vulnerable portrayal and Fumero absolutely nailed it. Kudos to Beatriz as well for directing a heartbreaking storyline without it becoming too preachy but not losing its realness.

Nominated by Lisa: Kate Beckinsale as Georgia Wells in The Widow

Wow! Kate gives a strong performance as her life was turned upside down when her husband mysteriously died in a plane crash in the Congolese jungle. Three years after the crash Georgia travels to the Congo to find out what really happened and if there is a chance he survived. This show is captivating and Kate Beckinsale is the heart of it. The Widow is currently available on Amazon Prime.
