Fall TV Preview: Tuesdays

By  |

Tuesday nights this fall are going to be busy for the Nice Girls. A couple of our shows moved to this night, we have a new superhero show that looks promising, plus what we were watching on Tuesday night’s last season. Here’s hoping the DVRs can keep up!

No Ordinary Family

No Ordinary Family season 1 castThis new ABC drama depicts the life of the Powell family, an ordinary family who end up with super-human abilities after a disastrous family vacation which ends abruptly due to their plane crashing into the Amazon River. Each member exhibits different skills when they get home, delighting parents Jim and Stephanie (Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz) while wreaking havoc on the lives of their teen children Daphne and JJ (Kay Panabaker and Jimmy Bennett).

Other cast members include Romany Malco, Autumn Reeser and Stephen Collins. The series comes from Greg Berlanti, the man behind Everwood, Eli Stone and Brothers & Sisters and Jon Harmon Feldman, who created Tru Calling and Big Shots. No Ordinary Family debuts September 28 at 8/7c. – Rueben

Running Wilde

Running Wilde season 1 cast photoKeri Russell and Will Arnett return to television with this romantic comedy about a filthy-rich but incredibly immature playboy – Steve, the son of an oil tycoon – who re-encounters his childhood sweetheart – Emmy, a liberal humanitarian – and tries to win (or buy) her love. The story is told from the perspective of a 12-year-old girl, Emmy’s daughter who happens to be months into a vow of silence. Despite having everything he ever wanted, Steve knows he can’t buy love and happiness, which falls in sharp contrast to Emmy, who has nothing but love and happiness. So with Emmy committed to doing good for nothing, and Steve being a good for nothing, will this hopelessly mismatched pair ever be able to reconcile their differences? Running Wilde debuts September 28 at 9:30/8:30c on FOX. – Melissa

Glee

Glee hit the ground running in its first season and never looked back. The musical dramedy set at an Ohio high school quickly became a cultural phenomenon and ruled the song charts by season end. The show racked up 31 nominations for various awards in its first season, winning a Golden Globe for best series, an Emmy for scene-stealer Jane Lynch, another for guest star Neil Patrick Harris, and accolades for directing and sound.

Some criticism that the show is more style than substance was meted out over the course of the season, which we hope has been taken to heart by creator Ryan Murphy, bringing us some substantial storylines for season 2. The kiss between Will & Emma in the season finale should set up some interesting drama, especially when John Stamos guests as Emma’s dentist beau who happened to be in an ’80s boy band, plus Finn & Rachel are together and apparently big fans of PDA and Rachel has competition from an exchange student played by Charice. We’ll have a special Britney Spears episode, featuring both Spears and Heather Morris’s delightful Brittany; a “Rocky Horror Picture Show” Halloween episode; Kurt and his first boyfriend; Quinn dealing with giving up her baby; and a triangle with Artie, Tina, and Mike.

Glee returns Tuesday, September 21, at 8/7c on Fox. – Melissa

Life Unexpected

Last season introduced us to Lux, a 16 year old girl who tracked down her birth parents hoping for court-ordered emancipation and found a make-shift family instead. Starring Britt Robertson as Lux, Shiri Appleby as her birth mother Cate, Kristoffer Polaha as her birth father, and Kerr Smith as Ryan, Cate’s new husband, “Life Unexpected” takes us on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Like in any family, being a teenager is hard, but for Lux, she has the added complication of teaching her parents how to be parents and learning to be a kid for the first time in her life. But their story both charms us and enchants us with their love, laughter and comedic adventures in discovering what being a family is all about. Life Unexpected airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on the CW. – Tiffany

The Good Wife

Coming off a phenomenal first season, The Good Wife returns September 28 to captivate viewers yet again with the story of a woman conflicted in both her professional and personal life. Julianna Marguiles portrays Alicia Florrick, the wife of disgraced politician Peter Florrick (Chris Noth). Alicia is also a junior associate at the firm of Stern, Lockhart & Gardner, working under a former law school classmate, Will Gardner (Josh Charles).  Torn between her loyalties to her husband and family and her desire to live her own life on her own terms, Alicia continues to walk a fine line between ethical and moral obligations. Joining Alicia in her daily struggles at home are her husband Peter Florrick (Chris Noth), her children Zach (Graham Phillips) and Grace (Makenzie Vega), her mother-in-law Jackie (Mary Beth Peil); then at the office, there are partners Will Gardner (Josh Charles) and Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), firm investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi), and arch legal rivals Glenn Childs (Titus Welliver) and Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry). Then, played by Alan Cumming, Eli Gold is Peter’s campaign manager who seems to hold all the cards in Peter’s political campaign and perhaps his criminal indictment as well. As the second season of The Good Wife unveils, it will be fascinating to see what questions get answered and whether the answers do not lead to more questions. The Good Wife returns on September 28 at 10/9c on CBS. – Tiffany

Sanctuary

The original Syfy series follows Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a 157-year-old brilliant scientist who runs a secret facility known as the Sanctuary, which houses strange, and sometimes terrifying, beings that hide among humans.  Her team includes Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) a forensic psychiatrist, Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins), her tech wizard, who has a secret of his own, and Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi), a quick-talking swindler and con artist who ends up working on the right side of things after a run-in with Magnus and Will.

When last we saw the team, Will was the victim of the Makri, an extremely rare species of spider that has him hallucinating and drifting in and out of consciousness while the cousin of the Makri, known as Big Bertha, a monstrously large Abnormal spider, which Magnus claimed to have killed four years prior, is alive and well, wreaking havoc on the world in the stunning cliffhanger season finale. Tune in to Sanctuary on Syfy on September 28 at 10/9c to learn the aftermath of Big Bertha’s effect on the world. – Rueben
