ONE CHICAGO Women: CHICAGO P.D. “The Thing About Heroes” (5×02) & CHICAGO FIRE “Ignite on Contact” (6×02) recap

By  |

Emotions were at a high this week in the ONE CHICAGO world with Intelligence dealing with a terrorist attack on CHICAGO P.D. and the crew over on CHICAGO FIRE dealing with the ramifications of last week’s fire and the revelation that perhaps it wasn’t actually an accident. Read on to find out how these events affected the leading ladies and what other events happened…

Kim Burgess: The week isn’t over yet but there’s a good chance that Marina Squerciati’s Burgess could be my pick for Woman of the Week; I always enjoy watching Burgess-heavy episodes. If there is anything that I’ve learnt over the last couple of years is that as compassionate and wide-eyed Burgess may be, if you hurt her or her friends, her mama bear instincts will come out and you don’t want to be on the other end of that. We saw it when Roman got hurt in season three, we saw it last season after her sister was attacked and we saw it again this week after fellow cop Frank Toma, an officer she helped train, was accused of being involved in a terrorist attack. Burgess is so determined to prove Toma’s innocence that she argues with Voight and repeatedly tells new partner Antonio that Toma is innocent. It turns out she was right and discovers that Toma was running his own off the books undercover opp but not before Toma takes his own life in front of her, moments after she tries to calm him down and talk him out of it. If there’s one thing that I admire about Burgess it’s her conviction and belief in doing the right thing. At the end of the episode, we see her pay a visit to Toma’s grieving parents and telling them that no matter what the media and everyone else may say, their son was a hero. She also pays a visit to Toma’s bullying partner, who also happens to be the son of a powerful member of the Chicago P.D., and warns  him that one day she will make sure he pays for the way he treated Toma and not even Rose’s daddy will be able to save him. Having heard about this encounter, Voight later warns Burgess to stand down from her vendetta otherwise it will cost her her career. We don’t get many scenes of these two together but we had a couple in this ep, which was nice to see. Oh and following on from last week, we learn that the new man in Burgess’s life is indeed real and is an assistant US attorney named Matt Miller, who she met last year.

Trudy Platt: Correct me if I’m wrong but I think we only had one scene with Platt this week and that’s when Burgess comes into the district after the explosion looking for Toma and Platt reveals that he’s nowhere to be found. More Platt please. I’m also hoping to see her appear on FIRE in relation to you know her husband Mouch’s near death experience.

Hailey Upton: Intelligence’s newest member seems to be settling in nicely. For the most part we’ve seen her nice side but this week she proves that she can be a tough cop when her and partner Halstead get a bit aggressive and in your face while questioning a suspect at Med. Nope there is no good cop, bad cop here. She also surprised me when questioning another suspect back at the district when after he asks to see his wife, she lays in front of him photos of his wife shot dead after she tried to pull a gun on Halstead earlier that day. Don’t underestimate Upton!

Gabriela Dawson: Dawson spent this week flitting between hanging out with Kidd after they’re paired together for the Muster and also sitting in with the boys as Boden, Severide and Casey attempt to get to find out the truth about last week’s fire at Boden’s wife’s school. Didn’t Dawson spend some time working with the arson department? Shouldn’t the guys have asked her to help them from the start? Anyway, back to her bonding time with Kidd, it was nice to see them hanging out. As they pointed out during the ep, they don’t do it nearly enough, which is strange considering how close they were when Kidd first appeared on the show. Yes life gets in the way sometimes but here’s hoping that we get to see a bit more girl power on the show and more scenes with these two! (Brett can join too.)

Sylvie Brett: Yes Brett’s hometown friend Hope is still hanging around this week and the sweet paramedic remains clueless as to the real reason why her friend is constantly hanging around Firehouse 51. Sure she says she likes it there, but c’mon Brett, the reason is because of a certain someone with the initials K.S. While Brett may be clueless to that, she has clued on that something is bothering Hope though and thinks it could be something from back home. I’m sure all will be revealed soon enough. Also this week, Brett along with the rest of 51 gets dragged into participating in the Firehouse Muster courtesy of Mouch. Originally he assigns her the dummy dragging event, which despite all her preparation in the lead up to the event is something that she struggles with and ends up secretly swapping with Cruz who was assigned the pole challenge. Just as well because the race to get points is tight and Brett ends up winning her event. Firehouse 51 end the episode winning the final tug of war challenge against Firehouse 87, to which Mouch had put a wager on for $1000, yeah baby!

Stella Kidd: As well as some girl time with Dawson this week (by the way they dominated at their event of course, not that we’d expect anything less from these two strong characters), we see that Kidd has taken to crashing with Severide quite well (which by the way none of the Firehouse knew about according Dawson, which kind of triggered the whole girls hang in the first place) and according to her there’s no awkwardness. That being said, that doesn’t stop Kidd from giving Hope the sideeye every time she comes to the firehouse or rolling her eyes. We see you Kidd (but don’t worry, we’re also doing the same as you. Ha!) I do enjoy the friendship between Kidd and Severide and not sure I want to see them together but I most certainly don’t want to see him with Hope.

April Sexton: The CHICAGO MED nurse makes an appearance on this week’s P.D. with both victims and suspects of the bombing taken to MED. She stands up to Halstead and Upton and refuses to let them speak to a suspect straight away – while they are doing their job she is also trying to do hers.

CHICAGO P.D. airs Wednesday at 10/9c on NBC and CHICAGO FIRE airs Thursdays at 10/9c also on NBC. CHICAGO MED returns midseason in 2018.
