How Is the 2013-2014 TV Season Performing Now
As we edge closer to the end of the 2013-2014 TV season, the networks are slowly beginning to make their plans known for the fall, announcing the renewals of many new and existing dramas. And while the full TV season for fall will officially be announced to the advertisers in New York by the networks in mid-May, we do have a good idea how things will play out (at least for now).
Let’s take a look at where the networks stand as of right now:
NEW DRAMAS:
Over the last few weeks several new dramas have debuted, including the following:
Star-Crossed premiered on The CW on February 17, earning an average of 1.1 million viewers over the last five weeks. Given how the network’s other new shows have performed over this year, this average isn’t that impressive; but there is a slim possibility that it could be renewed for a second season.
Over on ABC, the new Christian Slater-Steve Zahn-led series Mind Games debuted on February 25 and in its one month on air, it has garnered an average of 2.6 million viewers. If you compare that average to the average – 3.4 million viewers – of the new series Killer Women for which Mind Games replaced in the Tuesday at 10 PM timeslot, it is easy to see that Mind Games will not be returning for a second season.
On the other hand, ABC debuted their new drama Resurrection on March 9, earning 13.3 million viewers in its first airing; and while the second episode saw a drop in the ratings, the new series still earned double digits, garnering 10.8 million viewers. There are six more episodes of the series, but there is a good possibility that there will be much more of Resurrection to come.
Meanwhile NBC debuted two new dramas within one week: Believe on March 10 and Crisis on March 15. The former earned 10.7 million in its first airing, but dropped to 6.5 million viewers in its second airing while Crisis earned 6.5 million in its debut. Given these numbers, it is hard to determine how things will go for either show, but the next few episodes will be key to each show’s future. And, the network just announced that the spin-off series Chicago P.D. has been picked up for season two.
Lastly, The CW premiered its new drama The 100 on March 19, earning 2.7 million viewers, which is an extremely good rating for the network; but much like Crisis and Believe, the next few episodes of The 100 will determine its fate.
EXISTING DRAMAS:
CBS has already made its renewals of its existing dramas known with only The Mentalist in doubt. Meanwhile NBC recently announced that Grimm and Chicago Fire will be back, but there is no word yet on whether Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Parenthood, Revolution or Hannibal will return or not.
On the other hand, ABC has yet to announce what shows are being renewed, but it is obvious that Castle, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy will be back, but the futures of Nashville, Revenge and Once Upon a Time are still in doubt.
There isn’t much to report on FOX simply because the network has already renewed the few existing dramas it has on the air while The CW has also made its renewal announcement with several existing dramas still hanging in the balance especially Beauty And the Beast, which was pulled from the line-up about two weeks ago with the show’s remaining six episodes relegated to summer.
The final decisions for each network will be made on the following dates:
May 12 – FOX and NBC Upfront Presentations
May 13 – ABC Upfront Presentation
May 14 – CBS Upfront Presentation
May 15 – The CW Upfront Presentation
