Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: “Zoey’s Extraordinary Girls’ Night”

By  |

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s aired a new episode from its second season this week. Let’s first find out what this episode was about.

Here is a synopsis for this week’s episode entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Girls’ Night“:

Zoey gets more than she bargained for when she tries to help Emily with a problem; Maggie reconnects with an old friend; Max, Simon and Mo have a bonding night together.

Rueben:

The episode picked right up where last week’s episode left off with Zoey trying to comfort Emily after her gut-wrenching heartsong brought last week’s episode to a conclusion. Sadly, Emily did her best to put on a good show and deflect that anything was wrong. It’s been clear since Zoey figured out that it was Emily who was deadly troubled that Emily was suffering with depression; but it was a matter of getting Emily to talk about it let alone admit to it. Zoey really tried throughout the episode – even with the help of mom Maggie and big brother (and Emily’s husband) David – to no avail. Emily was doing everything she could to try to logic her way out of what was going on. Thankfully, she admitted to hubby David, at the end of the episode, that she has postpartum depression, telling him that she needs professional help. Kudos to Alice Eve – yet again – for an amazing performance in this week’s episode, and I truly hope they find a way for Emily to get the help that she needs.

Speaking of getting help, we knew that Oscar Nunez would be coming onto the show as Zoey’s therapist, but I have to admit I liked how they showed that it was Zoey in a therapist’s office [not Emily] and I was even more surprised that she came right out, saying “I have a superpower and I think it’s ruining my life.” Wow! It’s going to be interesting, to say the least, to see how this all works out.

How great was it to see Bernadette Peters in the episode again, returning as Deb. It was nice to see Maggie be able to “hang out” with someone who understands what she is going through, to see her be able to talk to someone about her awkward dinner with her couple friends; for to just be able to have a little fun with someone who gets it. I hope that we get to see Deb and Maggie hang out again; although I hope that Maggie doesn’t make hanging out at the casino a regular thing.

I also really enjoyed the juxtaposition of watching Maggie and Deb at the casino, Zoey and Emily at the night club and Mo, Max and Simon on their spa “retreat” inside Mo’s apartment. That whole scene was quite fun to watch! Letting the guys express their feelings over their significant others; letting Emily dance out her troubles (at least for a short time) and for Maggie to step outside herself even for just one night.

Now it’ll be time to bring on the therapy sessions for Zoey as well as making sure that Emily gets the help that she needs.

Favorite lines from the episode include, Mo calling herself “Auntie Mo Mo” and then Simon asking Mo and Max if they’ve noticed that Zoey seems to have the supernatural ability to know what people are thinking. The looks on Mo’s and Max’s faces were priceless.

Roz:

This week reminded me how much of the emotional grieve from Mitch’s death we still haven’t dealt with. Emily’s worry about adding more to David’s plan with her PPD. This whole season has been dealing with their grief on top of everything else and everyone’s rightly cracking.

I think that also connects with Max and Mo and their issues with Rose and Perry. Everyone’s trying to take up as little space in the lives of everyone else, but it’s not that simple to pretend that we’re fine when we’re not.

Maggie finding her own balance feels like it will help everyone else in the Clark family; if she’s able to make good choices and make new connections I think that invites everyone else (like Zoey to do the same).

Karen:

omg BERNADETTE PETERS! I adore her. Deb is a great addition to this episode, and I would love to see her become a recurring character.

I felt Emily’s pain. Alice Lee is once again a force to be reckoned with. Mary Steenburgen is no slouch either. To see both characters blowing off steam and using joy as self-care was great to see, even if it wasn’t totally effective.

Simon is being a tad needy in this episode. I mean, I can see where he’s coming from, but didn’t he already know how much Zoey cares about her friends and family? He was on the receiving end plenty of times in the past. If he’s complaining about her empathy, he needs to remember that’s who Zoey IS. I’m still #TeamSimon though. Cheer up Simon! She’s talking to someone about her “issues.” And how great was it that he asked about her special ability? I’m glad you guys mentioned it. Probably my favorite moment in this episode.

Seeing Mo sing is always a treat. When he interacts with his “friend’s” kids – omg. Heart melty.

Nice to see Max and Rose continuing their relationship even though she’s leaving town. Now, can they do long-distance? Does it mean we’ll see less of Skylar Astin down the line? I hope not, but I like to see him happy.

I love when storylines mirror each other, so since Zoey, Maggie, and Emily’s storylines all had some similarities, it made me smile. They’re all searching for comfort and healing by confiding in someone else. Maggie with Deb, Emily with Zoey and David, and Zoey ultimately with a new therapist. AND HOW AWESOME WAS THAT LAST SCENE?! So good. I can’t wait to see Oscar Nuñez on the show. I think Zoey having an impartial sounding board and confidant will add an additional layer to the already complex character.
