Blindspot Roundtable: Existential Ennui

By  |

Blindspot is back after a week off and it came back with a bang! The episode titled “Existential Ennui” which focused on the following:

When an op goes bad, the team must deal with a proverbial monster in their house before it can take them down one by one. Meanwhile, Director Weitz is forced into a tense game of psychological chess as Madeline Burke attempts to assess his loyalty and root out a potential mole at the FBI.

STUPID

Roz: Can this go to everyone this week? I feel like the whole issue with the bad guy of the week is too much and then Madeline is still being her usual self in the FBI offices with Weitz. I can’t with everyone this week!

Cay: We are asked to suspend our disbelief a lot for this show, but the idea that Madeline went from America’s Most Wanted to suddenly running the FBI and a potential VP pick while she continues blatantly Madeline behavior such as executing people, is farther than I can go. Both of those positions would require ridiculous levels of vetting and even with friends in high places, there is no way that she’d manage to get there. Meanwhile, the flip that the team are now the enemies of America is likewise hard to accept.

Lisa: Yeah, Rich was the only one who didn’t fall on the stupid list in my opinion. He called them out for their bickering and I was glad. And it is unbelievable that Burke can even step foot in the FBI. Ugh…

Rueben:  Yeah, they were all off their game – except for maybe Rich (at least partially). They all have a bit of bunker-brain. Sure, they don’t have all the resources they usually have, but they are trained FBI agents (again except for Rich). They just aren’t thinking straight. And, I couldn’t agree more that Burke having the power that she has now: it’s completely unbelievable. I also still want to know who is this mysterious person who is leaving clues for them??

AWESOME

Lisa: Rich dotcom for the win! He always lightens the mood. I was so glad when he told them to shut the hell up. Only a good team member can call you out and point out when you are wrong.

Roz: Even if everything bugged me on the whole, I like that Jane and Zapata were able to talk about what it is that is making them anxious and nervous in this situation. I like that there can be a small moment to explain so much of what we know about these women.

Cay: While it took them a while to get to it, I did like the honesty between various members of the team. And I always love every episode that puts Patterson and Rich together!

Rueben: Rich! He got them to wise up by yelling, “Shut the hell up” at them. Again, they have bunker-brain; they’re not thinking level headed. And, I have to say I was kinda surprised by Weitz’s reaction (he actually had tears in his eyes) when Burke shot Briana. I can’t wait for Burke to be in dire straits with all of them, and they end her brutally.

SO SO

Roz: Chemical weapons? Haven’t we don’t that already? I feel like very big big issue has to be sort of end of the world situation and it’s a little old.

Cay: I spent most of this episode not sure what the team accomplished. They caught a bad guy, they learned very little from him, and they killed him to save Zapata. Obviously the Weitz-Madeline plot moved forward, but that flash drive better get the bunker story moving along before I lose interest!

Rueben: Most of this episode was blah to me especially bringing a monster into the bunker. Sure Jane didn’t know he was a monster, but bringing anyone back to the bunker is just a really bad idea.

Lisa: I agree with Rueben, this episode was just meh for me. I feel like if I missed this episode, I didn’t miss any big plot change.

YOUR THOUGHTS

Cay: Not for the first time, Zapata seems to be quite a liability for the team. I think she needs to stay in the bunker for a while. Yes, she’s been through a lot, including losing Reade, but I’m growing weary of her.

Weitz needs to grow a spine and take control. He’s probably the only one that can bring Madeline down and he’s got plenty for which to atone.

Rueben: How many times have we had a chemical attack on the show? Isn’t this just like having yet another bomb to defuse? And that promo showing Reade. WTF?! I want to owe it to Zapata having PTSD from the explosion and losing Reade, but seeing him isn’t good. There is NO WAY Reade is alive either. It’s just not possible this time.

Roz: Why is someone dead back in that promo? What the hell? Don’t tease me like that NBC!

Lisa: Bombs and chemical attacks? Can we please get some more original plots. And Reade? Could he possibly be alive? I hope so but how is that possible? Does he have a twin we didn’t know about? Now that would be a twist.

BLINDSPOT will be back with an all-new episode on June 4th at 9/8c on NBC.
