Good Witch Recap: “The Clock”

By  |

Sunday night’s episode of Good Witch was all new.

Here is the synopsis:

“Cassie soon realizes her new Grey House guest has some lessons to learn. Sam discovers the benefits of a therapy dog when helping a patient. An unexpected visit from Stephanie’s ex-husband stirs up jealousy in Adam. Abigail helps Donovan write a speech and struggles to remember their song. George reunites with an old army friend and makes him an extraordinary and lifesaving offer. Meanwhile, a gift from Cassie brings new meaning to a serendipitous reunion between two of Sam’s patients.”

Obviously, there was a lot of story happening in last night’s episode so let’s take a look at each one:

Cassie, Abigail and Joy

The cousins began to learn a little more about each other over tea, talking about Thanksgiving traditions – especially the family’s love of The Maltese Falcon – and Cassie sharing there is a “certain energy (sic) of being a Merriwick.” That energy – or perhaps charm, or as we all know, magic – has a way of working its spell on people. Case in point: the cousins go to a local estate sale [see below for the reason why] where Joy wanted to buy an old fashioned clock, but it got snatched up by someone else. Joy met that “someone else” outside the house – a hunky young man, who she tried to convince to sell her the clock. Her charm – and even a little car trouble – doesn’t convince him.

Ironically (or not), the cousins encounter the same hunky young man – Carter – at the local restaurant where Joy challenges Carter to a game of darts. If she wins, she gets the old clock; if he wins, he gets her truck. Naturally, her charm/magic – or maybe skill – nearly won her the clock; but Cassie – trying to teach her younger cousin a valuable lesson – caused Joy to lose at the last second. Carter won her truck; but he didn’t leave with it. In fact, he left the keys on the windshield with a note stating that he couldn’t take her truck from her. [That’s assuredly not the last time Joy with encounter Carter].

Joy and Martha

Joy’s new job as designer of the Davenport Mansion – that will soon become the Tinsdale Mansion or the Mayor’s Mansion – is to help renovate each and every room. No small task there! In one of those rooms, Martha and Joy not only found an ornate Edwardian mirror but also an old fashioned clock that was missing its faceplate. [Ergo, the reason for Joy going to the estate sale with her cousins].

Martha and her Memoir

After having lunch with a former sorority sister, Martha was inspired to begin composing her memoir. But as she attempted to record her stories, they weren’t flowing as easily as her elaborate speeches. In the end, she decided to embellish her life to make it much more colorful, but that wasn’t necessary. As she read the first lines of a chapter to Cassie – and Joy, who showed up unexpectedly at Martha’s office – the cousins told her that being honest was a much better choice. It was also during this impromptu reading that Martha learned that Joy is a Merriwick.

George and Harry

Near the beginning of the episode, George announced to Cassie that he was going to be meeting up with an old Air Force buddy later that day. At the bistro, George and Harry reunited over lunch – and a great piece of pie. It was during this reunion, that George learned (off camera) that Harry needed a kidney transplant. Given their history, George wanted to help Harry. He went to Sam to learn about donating a kidney to Harry, who has been on the transplant list for a very long time. This storyline moved along very quickly with Sam finding out – almost too quickly – that George wasn’t a match; and then – with a little nudge of magic from Cassie – Harry’s doctor called to say they finally had a kidney transplant for him. We learned at the end of the episode that George saved Harry’s life way back in the day and Harry went on to earn a Purple Heart, which Harry gave to George for being such a devoted friend.

Donovan and Abigail

Taking a departure from their worries over the Davenport-Merriwick curse, Donovan was attempting to write a speech – he is running for Governor after all. He was having a bad case of writer’s block and even his musical playlist – which included “their song” wasn’t helping. Of course, Abigail was surprised they have “a song” because she didn’t know which song he meant. While at the local restaurant after the estate sale, Abigail talked to Cassie about “their song” with Cassie suggesting that Abigail play F7 – which turned out to be “Blue Suede Shoes” – on the restaurant’s jukebox; but that jukebox hadn’t played in years. When Abigail was back in Donovan’s office attempting to help him write his speech, she mentioned Blue Suede Shoes to him, which reminded him of family trips from his youth. That memory set him on the path of completing his speech, but his laptop abruptly stopped working. Donovan told Abigail to hit F7 in order to reset the keyboard. [Once again, Cassie’s intuition was foretelling.] Once he had the inspiration for his speech, a sudden rainstorm “that came out of nowhere” hit Middleton, and that simple phrase reminded Abigail of their song. She admitted as much to Donovan when they were at the local restaurant where he tried to play their song on the jukebox. At first, like she knew, the jukebox wouldn’t work, but then it started playing their song: Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are,” which was playing on the car radio during one of their first dates that was interrupted by an unexpected rainstorm that chased them into his car.

Stephanie and Adam and Wes

A very unexpected visit from Stephanie’s ex-husband Wes (did we even know that Stephanie HAD an ex-husband?!) made for some awkward moments between her and current boyfriend Adam. Wes was there to talk to Stephanie about the cabin that they still share ownership on; a cabin that they both seemed to have forgotten about. The former couple decided to go to the cabin to clean it out in order for it to be sold. As they were packing boxes, he found an old leather jacket that he’d been looking for for many years (was Stephanie saving it because she liked it more than she ever claimed in the past) and to unearth a picture of them in better times. They were obviously very young when they married, and it simply wasn’t meant to be – although given that hug Wes gave Stephanie as they parted after packing up their cars, it’s questionable what his feelings are for her. As for current boyfriend Adam, he asked Stephanie if it was odd that he wasn’t more upset by Wes’s unexpected arrive. Stephanie assured him that he has no reason to be jealous, and hopefully that will be the end of that.

Sam, His Patients and Their Little Dog Too

Throughout the episode Sam was treating two patients: one, a man who had knee surgery, who needed to begin his physical therapy but seemed hesitant to do so and two, a woman who needed to have carpal tunnel surgery. That woman had an emotional support dog with her in the hospital, and when she set him on the ground, the dog ran straight for the man recovering from knee surgery. Turns out that man and woman used to be man and wife, and that dog was THEIR dog. This storyline not only seemed to set Sam on a new path of proposing an emotional support program at the hospital but possibly reconnecting that man and woman who seemed to still have feelings for each other. In the course of the story, Sam was also having trouble with a malfunctioning wristwatch. At the estate sale, Cassie found a replacement watch that she gave to Sam as a gift. That watch had an engraving on the back; long story short, that watch was lost by the man at the hospital, gifted to him by his wife, the woman who needed the surgery. Sam gave the watch back to its rightful owner, and at the end of the episode, Cassie gifted Sam his malfunctioning watch, working much better now and now with an engraving of its own.
