Good Witch Recap: “The Chocolates”

By  |

Sunday night’s new episode of Good Witch on the Hallmark Channel focused on a visit by the Chocolate King – Kenny Cooper – for a 2-day chocolate exhibition, hosted by Abigail on behalf of the other confectionery business owners in Middleton as well she and Donovan still trying to figure out the curse while a few friends from Joy’s and Abigail’s pasts come for unexpected visits.

The Chocolate King Arrives

Kenny Cooper (Orphan Black’s Kristian Bruun) has taken over the mantle of the Chocolate King from his father, who visited Grey House in the past. He was the keynote speaker for the chocolate exhibition that was being held at Grey House for which Abigail had been selected to host. It would seem that Kenny had some very big shoes to fill; and once he tasted and learned about the Merriwick chocolate cupcake, he couldn’t resist. Literally! Since he was unable to take a photo of the recipe in the Merriwick family cookbook, he literally ripped out the page, hoping it would give his family’s business – which been floundering under his leadership – a much needed boost. But when he tasted the truth chocolates – another Merriwick specialty that Joy made against her cousin Cassie’s urgings to leave well enough alone – he came clean about the theft, returning the page to Cassie and coming to understand he needed to fix the company himself.

Merriwick Chocolates

Speaking of those truth chocolates, it would seem that Eunice Merriwick – way back in the day – had been courted for a very long time by Thomas Hillcrest. In an effort to learn his true intentions Eunice made the chocolates for him, only to learn – according to Cassie – that the “truth will set you free.” Joy hoped that was the case while both Cassie and Abigail didn’t quite agree. In fact, Joy was the one who made the chocolate tasted by Kenny later in the episode, in the hopes of learning some truths from her unexpected guest: her former business partner Donna, who arrived in town with legal paperwork to dissolve their partnership. As it turned out, the pair had been friends since the 9th grade, later going into business together, but sadly, Donna’s lies got them into a bit of trouble with a client, causing not only a giant rift in their friendship but also a great loss for their business. In the end, however, despite not allowing Donna to sample any of the truth chocolates, Donna came clean about the lies and Joy ripped up the legal documents, and offered Donna a job to help her complete Martha’s Mayoral mansion.

A New Administration

At the hospital, Sam had to deal with the new Chief Administrator: Grant Collins. At first it seemed the team men hit it off well, as they were both on board with acquiring a revolution new piece of equipment that would greatly aid in surgeries. But when Sam learned that Dr. Collins had hired Dr. Shane Jacobson, who had experience with the new piece of hospital equipment but – at least in Sam’s opinion – wasn’t the right kind of doctor for their hospital, the two men hit heads. Sam did what he could to reason with Dr. Collins, but the latter wasn’t having any of it. Perhaps Sam just needed to give Dr. Collins some truth chocolates?

Another Curse Clue

As we saw at the end of last week’s episode, yet another clue in the Merriwick-Davenport curse had come to light for Abigail and Donovan. That clue led them to a house that was given by Roderick Davenport to Priscialla Connelly, the traveler and painter, who helped place the curse on the family. Donovan and Abigail were both at the property – even though they were supposed to be staying away from each other – trying to find the next clue.

The clue didn’t reveal itself until much later in the episode after an unlikely game of Tuesday Night Trivia at the local bowling alley – in which Sam, Adam and Donovan joined as newcomers. After getting an answer wrong about what animal is associated with the moon – it’s a dove not an owl (Adam got the answer wrong, allowing the reigning champs to win yet another round of trivia). The answer of dove stopped Donovan in his tracks because there was a dovecote on the Connelly property. He hoped that would led them to the next clue, but when he checked the property with Sam he couldn’t find anything. However, there was a dove on the weather vane at the top peak of the house. In the final scene, Donovan interrupted Sam having a late night snack and sharing a kiss with his wife at Grey House to tell them – and Abigail who was also there – that he found something after all. The next clue was in the weather vane, but all it said was “hidden in plain sight.” Unfortunately, none of them could quite figure out what that clue meant.

Going On A Mission

With his hand healing, Adam felt he was being led to go on a mission – he is a chaplain after all. But he wasn’t quite sure where he might go on this mission or when he would leave. He did know that he wanted his girlfriend Stephanie to join him. But, it wasn’t as easy for her to leave all that she had in Middleton to join him. In the end, she decided to stay, and he was still going to leave. It was just a matter of when and where he would go.

Let’s Go Bowling

Another aspect of the episode was bowling. George’s team was in the league finals, but they needed a fourth player to take over for someone from his team. Enter Martha – who was a bowling champ back in her college days. Over time it was revealed that she had a complicated “relationship” with the game: she came this close to a perfect game back in the day, and that ‘failure’ to get a perfect 300 score haunted her to this day. But, she decided to dust off her skills and join George’s team, and just as she was nearly ready to crack her old 299 score, the power went out at the bowling alley. But this is Middleton after all, and with some encouragement from Cassie, Martha dusted off her bowling attire, pulled out special red bowling ball and finally rolled that perfect score.

A Blast From the Past

It was also funny to see – 15 years after college – that Abigail was visited by her old friend Jason. She and Jason had made a “promise” that if in 15 years if neither of them were married, that they would get married. Abigail had made that promise to him in order to make him feel better about a break-up, but despite being broken up from Donovan, she had no intentions of following through on that age-old promise. Those truth chocolates would, once again, come in handy, as – after sampling a piece of the yummy candy – Jason admitted to Abigail that she was perfect as a friend to him, but nothing more.

The big questions are – as we edge closer to the season finale (there is only one episode left before the sixth season comes to an end) – will Abigail and Donovan figure out a way to break the curse; what will happen with Adam and Stephanie and how will Cassie work her magic to give everyone a happy ending.
