9-1-1: 4 Inspiring Moments from “New Beginnings”

By  |

9-1-1 returned on Monday, and the second half of season 2 looks to be as action packed and dramatic as everything we’ve seen so far. This week had a couple of great upbeat and inspiring moments that are worth looking at.

The Unusual Rescue

A nice little play on words using the jaws of life on ….Jaws, or something like it. And the crew got to save a shark in the process, which was pretty cool. I’m pretty sure that in the real world, this crew would be getting written up all the time, but that doesn’t make for very good television. The Grateful Dead soundtrack was a nice touch to the scene as well. It added a nice upbeat tone to the episode.

Bobby Takes a Stand

Bobby is set to meet Athena’s parents, but things do NOT go smoothly. I will say, watching Bobby stick up for Athena to her mother is the first time I actually liked these two together. Athena’s mother questions her instincts, but Athena was right on this week when it came to using her instincts, and it looks like she and her mom will get find a way through. I’m not sure Bobby is gonna get much of a break though. But, mother-in-law jokes are a classic for a reason. Bobby and Athena need a little bit of agitation now and again to keep their relationship from becoming a little too saccharine sweet.

Maddie Makes a Move

Maddie is thriving with a new haircut. After being called out by her brother for keeping Chimney at arm’s length, Maddie finally asks Chimney on a real date. She’s ready to file for divorce to, but that will reveal her location to the ex. Little does she know that he already knows where she is, and is too close for comfort. The ex is still insinuating himself into Chimney’s life, and worse, he knows she asked Chimney on a date. We know danger is on the horizon, but it’s still nice to see her making progress in her life.

Athena’s Big Save

When a seemingly mistaken 9-1-1 call gives Athena and Maddie a bad feeling, Athena ends up finding out there’s more to a father and son than meets the eye. When the father tries to flee, Athena steps in at just the right moment and saves the day…as always. But, it’s always good to see, and watching her keep cool in all kinds of scenarios is something I’m happy to see again and again. Athena stepping out of the train at just the right moment was perfect, and a good reminder of what a badass she is.

The episode left us on a cliffhanger when Doug shows up for Chimney and Maddie’s date. Chimney’s been stabbed, and Maddie’s in trouble. The show has been hinting at a funeral, but let’s hope it’s not time for that yet.

9-1-1 airs Mondays at 9:00/8:00 c on Fox. Past coverage of 9-1-1 can be found here.

Cara spends way too much time thinking about subtext, and the puns are always intended. When not watching TV, she can generally be found with her nose in a book.
