Do You Remember?: Tru Calling

By  |

In the early aughts – on October 30, 2003, to be exact – FOX debuted a new supernatural drama called Tru Calling, which starred Buffy, the Vampire Slayer alum Eliza Dushku as Tru Davies, a 22-year-old medical school student who took a job at the city morgue when her planned internship fell through. But when the corpse of a deceased woman seemingly woke up and asked for her help, Tru discovered that she had the incredible power to relive that day in order to attempt to prevent that death.

Over the course of the show’s two season run, which consisted of 26 episodes, Tru struggled to keep her secret while juggling her responsibilities with her complicated personal life and learning how to control her power. That was made even harder halfway through the first season when Tru met Jack Harper (Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Jason Priestley), a man who shared her abilities, but who worked to preserve what he saw as the hand of Fate, ensuring that the people Tru tried to help stayed dead.

Tru was advised by her boss, Davis (comedian Zach Galifianakis, in a rare, serious role and about 5 years before he hit it big with The Hangover franchise), who acted as a sort of guide and mentor. Criminal Minds alum A.J. Cook played Tru’s best friend Lindsey, who knew nothing about Tru’s secret while Shawn Reaves played her impulsive younger brother Harrison and Jessica Collins (The Young and the Restless) played her sister Meredith. Both Lindsey and Meredith played little to no role in the show’s second season, though.

It should also be noted that Matt Bomer, in one of his first big TV roles (prior to roles in Chuck, White Collar and Doom Patrol, just to name a few), played Tru’s boyfriend Luc Johnston. In season two of the show, NCIS: Los Angeles alum Eric Christian Olsen played Jensen Ritchie, another of Tru’s boyfriends. Also appearing in season 2 were Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Party Down and Fatal Attraction) as Avery Bishop, a friend of Tru’s from medical school and CSI alum Liz Vassey, who played manipulative Dr. Carrie Allen.

Among the many guest stars who appeared in this short-lived series included the following:

Kristoffer Polaha (countless Hallmark movies, Life Unexpected and Wonder Woman 1984)
John Reardon (Hudson & Rex)
Cobie Smulders (the Marvel franchise)
Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead and Supernatural)
Carly Pope (Popular)
Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica and Castle)
Alaina Huffman (Supernatural)
Ryan Kwanten (True Blood)
Nick Wechsler (Roswell and Revenge)
Maggie Lawson (Psych)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Birds of Prey and Ahsoka)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men and The Buccaneers)
Missy Peregrym (FBI)
Erica Durance (Smallville and Saving Hope)
Tori Anderson (NCIS: Hawai’i)
Kavan Smith (Stargate franchise and When Calls the Heart)

Tru Calling was created by Jon Harmon Feldman, who has since worked on shows like Big Shots, Dirty Sexy Money, Designated Survivor and Monarch (the country music series from FOX). The show came to an end on FOX on April 21, 2005 due to low ratings, but oddly enough, it was adapted in Russia into a show, which translated in English. was called “I Revoke the Death” back in 2012.
