Nice Girls Talk Disco, Porn & Hot Cars from LUCIFER’s ‘City of Angels’
This week Lucifer treated us with a blast from the past which confirmed our characters lives were most definitely destined to converge! The guy upstairs was working overtime years in advance in getting everyone together.
Overall, what were your thoughts on the flashback episode?
Mynda: This was a perfect tone to start off the new year. Nothing too heavy. Sometimes a good look back clarifies the next steps forward.
Melissa: That was a fun episode! Significant to the story, but also a fun glimpse at Lucifer’s early days in L.A. Putting Lucifer and Chloe on the same case, but never actually meeting, was a neat twist. Especially since in the pilot, Lucifer thinks Chloe looks familiar, but matches her to the movie, not to noticing her at the fight.
Karen: I dug this episode! Seeing behind the scenes all timey-wimey is always fun for me. Not to mention the tiny Easter eggs for the comic book fans. Mazikeen’s outfit, her weapon being used to cut off his wings, Lucifer’s outdated clothes and his encounter on the street, etc.
What Easter egg did you most enjoy about this episode? Vette origin story? Luci’s Staying Alive look? Luci’s spank video of Chloe’s movie? Detective Dan and Cloe’s relationship? Luci’s reaction when Decker was near?
Mynda: I’m torn between Luci’s opening Disco Inferno walk of fame and the Corvette origin story. If I was a betting person I would guess Tony Manero stole Satan;’look back in the day! However, as a total muscle car girl, I always wanted to know how Luci got that gorgeous Vette! Amenadiel’s look of horror paired with Lucifer’s look of delight as they sped away, made my night! Lucifer was right. He can turn anything on!
Melissa: I was surprised to see Charlotte! Nice bit of retcon, though, tying her to the story even though she didn’t exist before last season. I also enjoyed Lucifer saying he could get used to being in the building where the fight was held…which later became Luxe.
Lisa: That’s tough because there were quite a few. the spank video was pretty funny but seeing Luci’s reaction when Decker was near was pretty cool knowing everything we know now.
Karen: I absolutely loved the magnetic attraction between Lucifer and Chloe, even though their paths didn’t directly cross. Also, he’s solving crimes with her without actually solving crimes with her. It was pretty cool. Good writing.
Did you learn something surprising about any character’s back story this episode?
Mynda: Nothing new, just good fun.
Melissa: I don’t think so. They were all clearly early versions of the characters we met in the pilot.
Lisa: Not really. I really did enjoy seeing Maze torture that guy though. She was a mess! I was so glad she was included in the flashback episode.
Karen: Nothing terribly surprising, although I’m still not sure Amenadiel wore that necklace consistently through Season one. I should go back and check I guess. I know it’s a HUGE part of Season two, so I’m okay with the conceit.
Favorite line or scene?
Mynda: For me it was all about the little things. Lucifer’s Staying Alive look, Amenadiel’s big sunglasses, Chloe’s hot tub video and the turn of Lucifer’s head when Chloe was near.
Melissa: The whole scene where Misty Canyons was trying to seduce Amenadiel for the porn movie was hilarious! Putting him in shortalls was the icing on the cake!
Lisa: Not really a fave line, but I quite enjoyed Amenadiel and Luci in the boxing ring. Seeing the two brothers battle it out was pretty entertaining (and Amenadiel’s body…Hot!).
Karen: The whole interchange between Amenadiel and Chloe was HILARIOUS!
Amenadiel: I respect the rule of human law, which is why I’m seeking your assistance in a matter of utmost importance. A robbery has occurred.
Chloe: Okay. What was stolen?
Amenadiel: My necklace.
Chloe: The estimated value?
Amenadiel: It’s hard to say, really, uh It’s not of this world, so there’s that. Priceless beyond measure.
Chloe: I’ll just put down $40. Where did the incident occur?
Amenadiel: In an alleyway south of “Cahunana” and Franklin.
Chloe: Cahuenga?
Amenadiel: “Cahunana” and Franklin. Now, this thief was armed, and, oh, yes, uh, I made a rendering. And I do believe that this should help you with your quest.
Chloe: Okay. So a jack-o’-lantern stole your necklace?
Amenadiel: So you know this man? Where can I find this Mr. O’Lantern?
Chloe: Did Paolucci put you up to this? You know it’s a crime to file a false report, right?
What do you think about this season in general? Do you like the direction this year compared earlier seasons?
Melissa: Gotta admit, the first half was shaky. I enjoyed the one-off episode they filmed focusing on some of the secondary characters, but they made for uneven pacing. And Lucifer’s regression into his childish, indulgent ways has been most unwelcome. This was a good episode, though, so I’m hopeful that it serves as a reset of sorts.
Lisa: Honestly this season overall hasn’t been my favorite, although a few of my favorite episodes have been this season which is weird, I know. I have really enjoyed the stand alone episodes we’ve had this season. The Bounty Hunter episode was awesome! I’m hoping the season will take a turn for the better plot wise and with this Cain storyline coming up, I think it will get better.
Karen: I guess I’m easier to please because I love this season. There were some parts of the Charlotte/Mum storyline last season that didn’t thrill me, so perhaps that’s why I’m so happy with these episodes? I dunno, this is still one of my “I can’t wait to watch it” shows. I feel like they’re really having fun making the show, and it’s pretty creative. The two throwback episodes in particular were way outside the box, and I appreciate it.
