What to Expect on TV in August

By  |

The Fourth of July has come and gone, Comic Con is nearly here and summer programming will be coming to an end in about six weeks. That being said, there are still a handful of made-for-TV movies and a new TV drama for which I am looking forward to seeing on the small screen in August.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES

The Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries will be celebrating summer throughout the month with the following themed made-for-TV movies:

On August 6, My Summer Prince will debut at 9 PM, starring Taylor Cole (from the Hallmark movie Appetite for Love) as Mandy Cooper, a young executive assistant aspiring to become a PR executive, who gets an opportunity to develop her skills in Greenbriar, Idaho. In that small town, Prince Colin of Edgemere, a handsome British monarch (Jack Turner from Stitchers) with a history of scandalous behavior, is arrested for defacing a landmark while making a public appearance. Things get complicated after Mandy sets out to repair Colin’s image, and the young publicist wonders if she can save her own reputation and still have a chance at summer love. The cast includes Lauren Holly (NCIS and Motive), Vanessa Angel (the TV series Weird Science) and Marina Sirtis (NCIS and Star Trek: The Next Generation)

On August 13, Summer in the City will debut at 9 PM. When a small town woman with Midwestern charm is given a big promotion managing a store in the Big Apple, she tries to adopt a big city personality and it leads to disastrous results. Realizing it’s better to be true to herself, she lets her personality shine and it becomes the secret to her success in work and in love. The film stars Julianna Guill (Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce), Marc Bendavid (Dark Matter), Vivica A. Fox and Marla Sokoloff.

On August 20, Summer Love will debut at 9 PM. When a widowed suburban mom, who’s recently gone back to school, takes an internship and enters the fast-paced tech world of millionaire “app-trepreneurs,” she discovers that although life seems to be a lot more digital, love needs to be a lot more real.

On August 21, JL Family Ranch will debut (on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) at 9 PM. J.L. is an old-fashioned, conservative cowboy who owns a large ranch in a small Texas town and is the patriarch of a sizeable family that all take shelter under his roof. He has to battle the outside forces of the modern world that is rapidly creeping into his expanding town in order to maintain possession of his treasured ranch and to keep his family together. The film stars veteran actors Jon Voight, James Caan, Melanie Griffith as well as Teri Polo (The Fosters), Grant Bowler (Defiance) and Steven Bauer (Ray Donovan).

On August 27, Song of Summer will debut at 9 PM. Fading pop star Debbie Taylor is on the verge of losing everything – including her freedom – when she runs away to suburban Ohio where she finds her way into teaching music to a talented group of misfit kids. As she lays low and taps into the kids’ talents in an attempt to become relevant again, she begins to realize that fame isn’t everything. The film stars 80’s pop star-turned-actress Debbie Gibson and Robert Gant (Queer As Folk).

NEW DRAMA

The new Hallmark Channel series Chesapeake Shores will debut on August 14 at 9PM. Based on the best-selling books by Sherryl Woods, this multi-generational family drama focuses on Abby O’Brien (Meghan Ory from Once Upon a Time), a high-powered career woman, divorcee and mother to twin daughters, who makes a trip from New York City to her hometown of Chesapeake Shores. Her visit home brings Abby face to face with her past, including her high school sweetheart Trace (Jesse Metcalfe from Dallas), her uncompromising father Mick (Treat Williams from Everwood) and her esteemed grandmother Nell (Diane Ladd from Wild At Heart). Abby realizes the toll her career has taken on her ability to be a hands-on mother to her daughters, and considers a permanent move to Chesapeake Shores. The show will also star Barbara Niven (Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove).
