My Top 14 Choices for April TV

By  |

April is right around the bend, and that means time for more TV to anticipate watching. There are plenty of options whether they are new dramas set to debut, new made-for-TV movies, even some specials.

I have whittled the full April TV calendar down to my top 14 choices, and they are:

MOVIES, MOVIES AND MORE MOVIES

As always there are new Hallmark Channel movies set to debut:

Just One Kiss on April 2 at 8 PM, starring Krysta Rodriguez and Santino Fontana) as well as veteran actors Illeana Douglas and Aida Turturro).

A Royal Runaway Romance on April 9 at 8 PM, starring Pretty Little Liars and Dancing With the Stars alum Brant Daugherty and Australian actress Philippa Northeast.

Love, Classified on April 16 at 8 PM that will feature Freeform’s The Bold Type alum Melora Hardin and Freeform’s Shadowhunters alum Katherine McNamara.

A Tail of Love on April 23 at 8 PM, starring When Calls the Heart alum Chris McNally and Brittany Bristow.

Switching gears, there is the Chris Pine and Thandie Netwon Netflix action film All the Old Knives where they star as ex-lovers and spies Henry and Celia (respectively), who meet over dinner to reminisce on their time together at the Vienna station. The conversation moves to the disastrous hijacking of Royal Jordanian Flight 127, which ended in the deaths of all on board. That failure haunts the CIA to this day, and Henry seeks to close the book on that seedy chapter. Over a sumptuous dinner, it becomes clear that one of them is not going to survive the meal.

DRAMAS COMING BACK

Hulu will premiere the second season of The Hardy Boys on April 6 while new episodes of New Amsterdam will return starting on April 19 at 10 PM on NBC.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES

Did you guys watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries online TEN years ago? I know I did, and loved every minute of those 100 plus episodes! Ashley Clements, who played the title character, in this vlog-style first-of-its-kind online series, will celebrate the anniversary by rewatching the episodes in The Look Back Diaries, sharing memories, stories, and commentary about the making of the show, her experiences at the time and ten years of perspective. Expect appearances by cast, crew and more along the way.  Check for details online to learn where to follow along with Ashley.

COMING TO AN END (FOR NOW)

The period dramas Outlander (on Starz) and Sanditon (on PBS) will both find their new seasons coming to an end on April 24 both at 9 PM.

WELCOME TO THE FOLD

Four very different dramas will be making their debuts throughout April: one a modern-day Western (think a streaming alternative to Yellowstone); a “reframing” of American leadership on Showtime with an impressive ensemble cast; a period piece drama looking at the untold stories and forgotten characters surrounding the Watergate scandal and a sequel (of sorts) to a classic film.

Here are the details on each of those dramas:

Outer Range on Amazon on April 15. The series centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. The cast includes Will Patton, Lili Taylor, Shaun Sipos and Imogen Poots.

The First Lady on Showtime on April 17 at 9 PM. The stories will be told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. Gillian Anderson will play Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Ellen Burstyn as Sara Delano Roosevelt, Regina Taylor as Marian Shields Robinson, Lily Rabe as Lorena “Hick” Hickok, Kate Mulgrew as Susan Sher, Judy Greer as Nancy Howe and Dakota Fanning as Susan Elizabeth Ford. Also starring are Aaron Eckhart as Gerald Ford, Jackie Earle Haley as Louis McHenry Howe, O-T Fagbenle as Barack Obama and Keifer Sutherland as Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Gaslit on Starz on April 24 at 8 PM. Julia Roberts stars as Martha Mitchell, a big personality with an even bigger mouth; a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John Mitchell (Sean Penn). Despite her party affiliation, she’s the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, causing both the Presidency and her personal life to unravel. The ensemble cast includes Shea Whigham, Patton Oswalt, Dan Stevens, Nate Corddry, Raphael Sbarge, Reed Diamond, Nat Faxon, Chris Messina, Brian Geraghty, Allison Tolman, Anne Dudek and Betty Gilpin.

The Man Who Fell to Earth on Showtime on April 24 at 10 and 11 PM (two back-to-back episodes). Chiwetel Ejiofor is a new alien character, who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future. The cast includes Naomie Harris, Bill Nighy, Clarke Peters, Jimmi Simpson and Kate Mulgrew.
