What I Give Thanks For This Year

By  |

How is it time for Thanksgiving already? Am I right or what? It just doesn’t seem possible that it is time for the holidays to be here. I mean it just seems like last week that I was preparing to head off to the Paley Fest in March and just like yesterday that I was attending Comic Con in July. Now the holidays are here and the big turkey day is only a few days off. It just seems a little surreal to say the least.

And I don’t know about you, but I’m just not ready for the holidays – at all! – and if the readers here at NiceGirlsTV have learned one thing about my personality during my time on the staff, it is the fact that I tend to be a bit sarcastic in my humor.

With that thought in mind, I decided to create a list of the TV (and a few non-TV related) ‘things’ for which we should give thanks this holiday season (and please let me restate I have a sarcastic sense of humor – so hang on):

1. Reality programming – What is it about reality programming that makes TV viewers flock to this “stuff”? I mean, most of it, is simply crap – yes, I said crap. We all have to live with reality every day of our lives just by getting up each morning, going to work or school or whatever it is that you do every day, putting up with traffic, troublesome co-workers, classmates or bosses and then when we all go home, too many people tune into reality programming to see what? Something other than their own reality, a show that isn’t “scripted” (because ALL reality shows are scripted whether you want to believe it or not) or just escape the doldrums of their own lives?

Final Analysis: Thank GOD! for dramatic programming – something that is intellectually stimulating, overly entertaining and just damn good. Needless to say, just give up the reality and watch something better.

2. Bicyclist – Yes, I’m venturing into the world of non-TV related items because this is one of my biggest pet peeves in the world. No matter where you live, but especially if you live anywhere in Los Angeles (like I do), bicyclist seem to think they are immune to the rules of the road. They don’t stop at stop signs, they don’t have or use turn signals, their headlights are nothing less than pathetic and even with whatever lights they have on their tires, they are impossible to see at night. And, if I hear one more time that bicyclist don’t have to wear helmets or protective pads, I may just bitch slap somebody. It’s simply irresponsible of riders to not protect themselves or take precautions when they are on the road.

Final Analysis: Put on a helmet, stay in your own bike lane and out of the travel lanes, blocking traffic and obey the rules of the road. Otherwise you just might get run off the road.

3. Celebutantes or Fake Celebrities – You know these people; they are the wanna-be celebrities who either “star” on reality shows or are a member of a high-powered family with far too much time on their hands, way too much money in their bank accounts and absolutely NO talent whatsoever. They have names like Kardashian, Hilton, Snooki or even that pathetic little beauty pageant queen Honey Boo Boo. I mean – really? – why should we continually be subjected to wanna-be’s like these? It just needs to stop!!

Final Analysis: Stop watching reality shows and reading those insipid tabloid magazines. Stop watching all the pathetic entertainment news shows that do NOT report on entertainment news but rather these fake celebs. Just stop the insanity, okay?!

4. Daytime, Afternoon and Evening News Shows – I know that most people like to keep up-to-date on the news, wanting to keep abreast of what is happening in their communities, cities, counties, states, country and across the world; but has anyone really stopped long enough to realize just how depression all that news is to the average citizen. I mean, I get the importance but why subject yourselves to all that bad news – because that is really the bulk of what is covered anymore.

Final Analysis: Watch the news only in brief increments; don’t submerse yourself in everything, as you’re only going to depress yourself. Give yourself and your family a much-needed break – you deserve it.

5. Talking or Texting on Your Phone at the Movies – Why do people think it is okay to talk or text on their phones while they are at the movies? Are you that dependent on technology that you can’t just turn it off and enjoy the movie? Do you have to check your email or what is happening on Twitter THAT badly that you can’t just wait until the movie is over? And, when someone asks you to turn it off, why do you act as if you are being threatened or act as if you have every right to be on your phone even though most theatres clearly state that you need to turn your phone off?

Final Analysis: Turn off your phones, enjoy the movie and try to make it a pleasant experience for everyone in the theatre. If you don’t, you are simply making a problem for yourself. And if you do turn off your phone, you just might find that you can survive for a few hours without your phone.

Yes, this is my sarcastic look at being thankful this holiday season, but I really do want to extend a wish to all of our readers that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family. And, most of all enjoy watching TV and please visit us here at NiceGirlsTV as often as you can.
