POLDARK: Change Around the Corner {Recap}
Poldark chose this week to complicate three of the biggest issues so far on this season: Ross’ (Aidan Turner) desire for money via smuggling, Dr. Enys’s (Luke Norris) love for Caroline Penvenen (Gabriella Wilde) and what is to become of Elizabeth (Heida Reed) and George Warleggan (Jack Farthing).
As audiences should expect, nothing seems to be easy in these three story lines.
Smuggling
Ross works as hard as he can to bring in more money for the house with these smuggling runs on their land, but Charlie (Ross Green) turns out to be the informant for the excisor and the militia, Ross’ plans to get some goods to his home are thwarted. There are so many facets to this story and it’s not as if everything is black and white. To be sure, Ross needs the income, but it also comes with tension between he and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson).
What will happen if Ross goes to trial again for this crime?
Budding Love
Dr. Enys has committed to run away with Caroline to Bath to show his love for her, but as he finally figured out who was the informant, he had to involve himself with the smuggling in the episode. He does his best to support the community he cares for so much and gets some signal to Ross of the raid, but all of that work costs him the ability to meet with Caroline to run away.
When he arrives to see what has happened to Caroline, he reads a note where Caroline tells him that she will always have been an infatuation rather than his true love. He does love his patients and when Caroline finally sees that, she sets him free from their dalliance.
Budding Something
As Elizabeth must rely on someone to help her make sense of the business of running her home, she continues to want Ross’ input. But Prudie keeps those letters from Ross and by the end of the episode, Elizabeth is calling on George for help in what she should do with the estate.
While I know Ross has complicated feelings for Elizabeth, I’m sure he won’t be pleased if she married George because of Ross’ lack of attention. It looks as if that will come, though, because Prudie has chosen to hide from Ross what is going on (not that he could have done much this week as he was off trying to find answers about the mine’s prospects).
George, meanwhile, seems pleased with the idea of having the woman that Ross originally pined for.
Poldark has three more episodes this season, which continues on PBS Sunday nights at 9PM/8PM Central.
