LOST GIRL Recap: “BrotherFae of the Wolves”
What if you could avoid a past mistake by making better decisions the next time around? That is the theme behind the episode that first finds Dyson being hit up by both Bo and Kenzi as they needed his help on a case. They need his wolf senses on some blood that was found at the scene of a disappearance to determine whose blood it might be. “What am I a German shepherd?” he asks; but he soon tells them it is cow’s blood, which doesn’t really help their case at all.
But that case is soon brushed aside because Dyson hears a noise in a nearby alley; and after taking only a few steps, he is jumped by an unidentified man. As they wrestle back and forth in the alley, Bo and Kenzi react in concern with Bo grabbing a nearby hose and dousing the two men with water. It turns out that the man is an old friend of Dyson’s and their wrestling is simply “a pack thing”.
At Trick’s bar we see Dyson and his old friend, Cayden, in what Bo and Kenzi joke is “normal male behavior” – arm wrestling, drinking and growling (well, they are wolves after all). Trick explains to Bo and Kenzi that they were in a pack together a few hundred years ago, as flashbacks are shown of the pack’s warring. As the story goes, the pack served the Fae King, doing his bidding until Dyson severed his allegiance to the King. Trick also shares that Cayden must in town either because he severed his ties to the King or the King is dead.
Soon enough we learn from Cayden that the King is, indeed, dead as of a few months ago; and he tells Dyson the history of the pack since his leaving. Turns out the pack started a company in the 90’s called Majesty where they earned billions, but the pack spent most of it on booze and women. Cayden went on to freelance, doing mercenary drops for an international company.
The men then reminisce about their warring days, as we see another flashback that focuses on a woman named Kiara who was with the pack during that time (we later learn that she trained the pack). Kiara was the lover of a member of the pack named Stefan who Dyson saw as a younger brother; but it was obvious that Dyson had feelings for her as well. He kept those feelings hidden because of his brotherly devotion to Stefan, who is shown being called for an audience with the King.
Meanwhile, Bo gets a desperate call from Lauren, who she and Kenzi meet up with at the apartment. It seems that the new Ash has ordered that all humans working for him must be confined to their homes when not working for him. Lauren ran away while she could because she feared this new edict. Bo was determined to go to the Ash to argue his new ruling, but since he isn’t very “bendy” on rules like the former Ash, Lauren convinced Bo to keep quiet so that she didn’t get on the Ash’s bad side even more than before.
Back at the bar, Dyson learns the real reason for Cayden being in town. He is looking for a weapon that was stolen two weeks ago and he needs Dyson’s help to track it down because it’s “in your backyard,” meaning the weapon is at the docks, which is Dark Fae territory; somewhere that Dyson can’t go, but he tells Cayden that “I know someone who can”.
This leads the men straight to Bo – where they, of course, discover Lauren hiding out – and soon enough Cayden explains he is searching for a Mongolian Death Worm, a weapon that is extremely rare and extremely dangerous. Lauren chimes in that she has read about the Death Worm: “it produces an electrical force that liquefies just about anything”. Cayden shares that the Worm is being searched for by a regime in North Africa, Dyson counters that the Dark Fae will, assuredly, be looking for it too and Bo says it could also be on the black market.
Cayden says that a Dark Fae arms dealer, oddly enough named Cumberbatch, probably has the Worm so Bo is sent in to find out if that is the case. Once Cumberbatch figures out that Bo is the succubus he has heard about and she gives him an excuse as to why she’s looking for the Worm, he takes her to the back of his warehouse where he quickly traps her in netting and shoots her with a dart.
At the same time, Dyson and Cayden are waiting for her outside and before Cayden goes in to find out what is taking Bo so long, they reminisce again about their warring times; learning that Stefan was sent on a mission by the King for which Dyson did not want him to undertake. In the hopes of keeping his young friend safe, Dyson goes to the Norn (the same Norn who eventually took his love for Bo at the end of the season finale) who demands his wolf in exchange for keeping Stefan safe. In that instance, he didn’t give in and ultimately Stefan is slain on his mission for the King, which we learn was concocted by the King to do just one thing: get rid of Stefan so the King could claim Kiara for himself. This, of course, was what led to Dyson severing his ties with the King.
Back at Cumberbatch’s warehouse, Cayden goes inside to get Bo out, learning the Worm isn’t there. So they take the dealer’s laptop in order to track down the Worm’s location; but with Bo being hurt from the dart she has to feed first. Since bedding Dyson isn’t an option, she has sex with Cayden in order for her to heal; while in the next room – a little too voyeuristically I might add – Kenzi and Dyson are working on breaking into Cumberbatch’s laptop and Lauren is bidding her time in the kitchen making cupcakes (yes, cupcakes and tech wizardry while Bo has sex in the next room – welcome to Lost Girl!)
Thanks to Kenzi’s Vienna friend who is able to crack the laptop, they track down the Worm at an underground auction where she and Bo go undercover as bidders with Dyson and Hale acting as their combined muscle and arm candy with Cayden “in position” to help the team get the Worm out of the auction house without incidence.
Strangely enough, the Worm turns out to be a “little old lady” named Velma, who is 3,000 years old. Velma can’t live without her miniature television set and when it is taken away, she unleashes her ability: high voltage laser eyes that melt a tank contained in the underground auction house in seconds. This, of course, scares and intrigues everyone at the auction, causing the bidding to go into overdrive. Bo ends up with the top bid of $155 million dollars, but since they don’t have the money, Bo and Dyson approach the auctioneer named Brikim, stating they are confiscating the weapon in the name of the Ash.
Before a knockdown fight can happen between Dyson and Brikim’s men, Cayden shows up, revealing that he and Brikim were actually partners until Brikim reneged on their deal, stealing the Worm for himself. Cayden takes the Worm to Cumberbatch’s warehouse, getting paid with a bag of diamonds. This time a fight does happen between Dyson and Cayden while Bo and Hale work to keep Velma calm, which allows Cayden to escape (albeit temporarily) because the fight leaves him severely wounded and easy for Dyson to track down.
Surprisingly, Dyson and Bo find Kiara (who Cayden said killed herself after the King died) in the back of the van (where Cayden had gone to hide) because Cayden believed they would get away and eventually Kiara would fall in love with him. While Bo and Dyson rescued Kiara, this gave Cayden yet another chance to get away.
Apparently, all’s well that ends well with Velma being taken to the Ash for safekeeping, Kiara is with Dyson for safekeeping and Lauren is hidden secretly at Bo’s for safekeeping; but it is questionable how long any of them will really be safe.
