My Top TV Choices for May TV
The truncated 2023-2024 TV season will be coming to an end in May and a lot of other programming options will, of course, air throughout the month. The following are my top choices for next month, including some T finales, some new dramas, new seasons of a couple of other dramas and a handful (or so) of movies.
Let’s start with the season finales:
NCIS on CBS at 9 PM on May 6
Fire Country on CBS at 9 PM on May 19
The Equalizer and Tracker on CBS on May 19 at 8 and 9 PM respectively
Then there are the unexpected series finales of:
NCIS Hawai’i on CBS on May 6 at 10 PM
So Help Me Todd on CBS on May 16 at 9 PM
Next up are the TV movies that I am most looking forward to watching:
The Idea of You on May 2 on Amazon Prime. Anne Hathaway plays Solène, a 40-year-old single mom, who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine from Mary & George and Purple Hearts), the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet.
Mother of the Bride on Netflix on May 9. Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove play mother and daughter, Lana and Emma. Emma returns from London, announcing that she’s getting married next month. Things become more complicated when Lana learns that the man who stole Emma’s heart is the son of the man who broke hers years ago.
A Whitewater Romance on the Hallmark Channel at 8 PM on May 11. Cindy Busby (Heartland) and Benjamin Hollingsworth (Virgin River) star as Maya and Matt, who meet in the Rocky Mountains at an exclusive business retreat. As they’re forced to pair up, an unlikely connection begins to evolve.
Family Practice Mysteries: Coming Home on Hallmark Mystery on May 17 at 9 PM. Amanda Schull (12 Monkeys) and Brendan Penny (Chesapeake Shores) star in the latest mystery about a former Army surgeon who moves back to her hometown, joining a practice of family doctors. But when she’s drawn into solving the mysterious death of a patient, her quiet life becomes upended and she begins to work with a local police officer.
Then there are the dramas that are back with new seasons:
Doctor Who on Disney+ on May 10 with Ncuti Gatwa taking over the title role
Harry Wild, starring Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman star Jane Seymour, in its third season on Acorn TV; and,
The much anticipated third season of Bridgerton, well at least part 1 of the new season, on May 16 on Netflix.
Lastly, there are three very different, new dramas set to debut throughout May, including:
Dark Matter [not to be confused with the sci-fi series on Syfy from 2015 to 2017] on Apple TV+ on May 8. Joel Edgerton stars as Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man who is abducted into an alternate version of his life, and tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived.
In Limbo on Hulu on May 8, which stars The 100’s Bob Marley as Nate, a happy-go-lucky guy with a good job and a loving family. But, when he commits suicide, his best friend Charlie is hit by a wrecking ball of grief. The only thing harder than losing his best friend is having Nate return the next day as a ghost. It seems Nate is stuck in limbo and needs Charlie’s help.
Eric on May 30 on Netflix. This period piece drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as
a father in a desperate search for his missing 9-year-old son who disappeared one morning on the way to school.
