Do You Remember: Deception
On March 11, 2018 the new crime drama Deception debuted on ABC. The series was created by Chris Fedak (who was one of the executive producers on the NBC drama Chuck) and produced by Berlanti Productions and VHPT Company in association with Warner Bros Television.
The series starred Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, a superstar magician who joins the FBI as the world’s first “consulting illusionist” to help them solve crimes after his career is ruined by a scandal. It was quickly revealed in the series premiere that Cameron had a twin brother Jonathan (also played by Cutmore-Scott), who had been helping with the illusions for years and was currently in prison.
The cast consisted of Ilfenesh Hadera (who can be seen in Godfather of Harlem) as Kay Daniels, a take-charge, hard-working FBI special agent who teams up with Black; Amaury Nolasco (best known from his time on Prison Break) as Mike Alvarez, a classic FBI agent who is secretly a huge fan of magic, and of Black in particular; and Laila Robins (who has seen been in The Boys, The Blacklist and Dr. Death).
Black’s illusionist team included Lenora Crichlow (from the original British version of Being Human) as Dina Clark, makeup artist and Black’s producer; Justin Chon (formerly from the Twilight movie franchise) as Jordan Kwon, a street magician who works for Black; and Vinnie Jones (from the box office movie Snatch) as Gunter Gastafsen, the world’s greatest illusion builder.
Among the recurring cast were:
Stephanie Corneliussen was the “mystery woman” from Cameron’s past; Naren Weiss as Dekker, the weapons visionary for the mystery woman; and the one and only Billy Zane as Switch, an artist with ties to the mystery woman. And, Evan Parke as Winslow, an inmate who coerces twin Jonathan to do odd jobs for him.
Some of the guest stars included Brett Dalton (from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD); Jack Davenport (from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) and actor-director Mario Van Peebles.
Here is a trailer for Deception:
The debut episode earned a respectable 6 million viewers, but over the course of 13 episodes the series dropped down to just a little over 2 million viewers, averaging out to 3.5 million viewers overall. The show reached better success in France where it became the number one show in its time slot and after 7 episodes, the show broke viewing records in Germany. Unfortunately, two months after it debuted, ABC cancelled the show with four episodes airing after the cancellation.
