Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Karen Schaler

Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is shone on journalist, screenwriter, producer, author and national TV host Karen Schaler.

Karen grew up near Seattle, Washington and in Los Angeles, California. She graduated, with honors, from California State University Fullerton with a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Sociology.

She has worked as a TV correspondent on CNN, and as a reporter/anchor at ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX affiliates in major TV markets across the country.

Karen was the first TV journalist embedded with troops in Bosnia where she wrote, produced and hosted an Emmy award-winning half-hour TV documentary that aired on NBC. She was also the first journalist ever embedded with a combat Apache helicopter unit in Afghanistan in 2007 where she wrote, produced and hosted an Emmy award-winning one-hour TV documentary that aired on ABC.

Among her many publishing credits are The New Yorker, Boston Globe, New York Daily News, Town & Country, US Airways Magazine [and more]. She also has more than 500 publishing credits in national magazines, newspapers and online.

She wrote the original screenplay for the most talked about Christmas movie of the 2017 TV season A Christmas Prince, which aired on Netflix, and the sequel – A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding – will debut on the streaming service this Friday, November 30.

Karen is also the writer of the original screenplay for the recently aired Lifetime holiday movie Every Day is Christmas that starred Toni Braxton, Gloria Reuben and Michael Jai White. And her next movie – based on her book – Christmas Camp will premiere this year.

After hosting ABC’s national travel show, she created and trademarked her Travel Therapy TV segments, featuring the most inspiring and empowering places to go around the world based on what you’re going through in life. Travel Therapy TV airs nationally on top ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and The CW stations and streams internationally.

Additionally, she is a sought after lifestyle and travel expert appearing on Good Morning America, TODAY , Fox & Friends, FOX, Inside Edition, Daily Mail TV, CNN, MSNBC, the BBC, and on dozens of radio shows and local TV affiliates across the country.

When Karen’s not traveling researching her next story you can find her in New York City, Scottsdale, AZ, and visiting her family in Washington State.
