A Million Little Things: Friday Night Dinner

By  |

The fourth episode of the debut season of A Million Little Things aired on Wednesday night. Here’s the official synopsis:

The aftermath of Eddie and Delilah’s secret takes a toll on everyone in the group; Maggie and Gary’s relationship is tested when an old fling turns up.

Rueben: There have been comparisons between This Is Us and AMLT since the beginning and in this episode we get Gerald McRaney as Delilah’s dad. What?! Granted, for me, his appearance wasn’t as tear-worthy as that of Dr. Katowski on This Is Us, but it still was moving. Delilah’s dad is suffering from early on-set dementia, which was very apparent in the final scene. Given the fact my late mother suffered from the same illness, I’m quite surprised that I didn’t tear up.

I have to give Sophie credit for being the strong one, not wanting her mom to push her dad out of the picture by changing up their pizza night. I was a little taken aback by the emotional support that Katherine provided to Sophie while waiting for Eddie to come home. I wasn’t expecting Katherine to actually be that nice given what we’ve seen of her so far.

Garbear! Really?! That whole encounter at the breast cancer support group meeting with Gary’s ex Rebecca was awkward in so many ways, but that nickname. Bleh! I have a feeling that Maggie isn’t going to let that go though. What’s more, however, about their relationship is that Gary ran into Maggie’s ex Tom, who let it slip about Maggie being sick again. How long will Gary keep his silence; and how long will Maggie keep mum. Is she really going to just forego all treatment?

I also liked that we got to see a little more backstory on Eddie and how he was kicked out of the band. I’d like to see more backstory on Gary and Rome. How did things play out when Gary learned about his cancer? What led Rome to becoming a commercial director instead of a film director?

The lingering issue, of course, is that we STILL do not know why Ashley, Jon’s assistant, hid that paperwork from Delilah, the cops and everyone else? Why? It also seemed – from Ashley’s conversation with Delilah – that there might have been more going on between her and Jon – or maybe more unrequited by Ashley – that we need to learn more about.

Kudos to Rome, by the way, on quitting his job and pursuing his dreams. My only concern is will things work out the way he hopes; or will something else happen to hinder his goal of finally making his film.

Cay:

I like how we get to see all of the relationships before Jon’s death in the flashbacks and from different points of view. Based both on flashbacks and the current timeline, I’m feeling more sympathetic for Delilah but Eddie’s past just makes him seem like a real jerk. Especially as Katherine is looking better and better. Until now, we mainly saw her from Eddie’s POV, but now we’re seeing her (and him) in a different light.

I’m not sure what to make of Maggie – she counsels others so well, but she doesn’t seem to take her own advice. While chemotherapy is miserable, the alternatives are hardly more appealing. I’m getting annoyed with her not being straight with Gary, especially as he’s opened up more to her. His ex was just over-the-top annoying. But, from what we know about his character already, he’s the kind of guy who hooks up with women in a church bathroom after a breast cancer support group…but Maggie seems to mean more to him.

These people socialize a lot more than normal people, I swear! It seems that none of them actually spend a day with only the family they live with without interacting with at least one other couple or person.

I just don’t trust Ashley – every time she shows up I wonder what her deal is and why she is still hiding the papers Jon left.  I’d like to get back to that bit of mystery.

Cay's family thinks her obsession with pop culture is "not normal". Normal is boring!
