Outlander Recap: Season Finale “A Hundred Thousand Angels”

By  |

The season finale of season seven of Outlander aired a little over a week ago on Starz, and 1) I needed a little bit of time to fathom all that played out in that episode because there was a LOT of story and 2) I live in Southern California near the heart of Los Angeles and was preoccupied by the horrible wildfires that were hitting many of the communities near me.

That being said, let’s take a dive into all that happened in the season finale, ok?

The episode started with two children running in a field and then going straight into the arms of a woman, who clearly seemed to be their mother, while they were surrounded by dragonflies. Fans of the show know the significance of dragonflies to Jamie and Claire so that visual is not really a surprise, right? And then the scene moved to Jane being questioned by an inquisitor into the “murder” of Captain Harkness with Jane giving him a hard time with her truth until he mentioned her sister. It certainly felt as if that opening scene was a flashback to Jane and Frances with their mother. Then the title scene showed a blue light in the sky reminiscent of the Northern Lights, which would come to mean something later in the episode.

The scene then jumped over to Claire and Jamie inside the church that was used as the field hospital for the recent battle that caused Claire’s life-threatening injury. Her surgery was over and Jamie was clearly worried about her. But thankfully she whispered to him, “I’ve decided not to die,” and he sighed with relief.

Then the story shifted over to the British Army campgrounds to see Lord John and William talking with the young man asking his “father” for help. William wanted help in trying to save Jane, who has been sentenced, without a trial, to be executed for her crime. Meanwhile, back at the church, Ian had returned from helping to rescue William from the Hessian (aka German) soldiers and was reunited with Rachel and his faithful companion Rollo.

Then the story jumped ahead one week with Claire recuperating, still at the church with Jamie where she asked her husband if they could please return home to North Carolina. Jamie told her as soon as she was well enough to travel they would leave. That night, much to Claire’s surprise, she was visited by – of all people – Master Raymond, the apothecary they met in France over 20 years ago. He came to her to ask her forgiveness, and told her, rather cryptically, “someday you’ll know” why he did what he did. Claire experienced the same vision of bird’s wings and the color blue, as she did after Master Raymond saved her life after Faith’s birth, and then Master Raymond walked away from her bed and seemingly disappeared. Seconds later, she startled awake, asking Jamie if he saw anyone in the room and shared with him that she saw Master Raymond.

Meanwhile back in time with Buck and Roger they were leaving Lallybroch, only to discover a young boy was standing a short distance from them. That boy turned out to be Jemmy, who exclaimed “Da” and ran toward Roger. As the father and son grabbed each other in a big bear hug, Roger looked up to see Brianna and Mandy standing there too. At least the family was reunited, but you could see the look of disappointment in Buck’s eyes, as it was clear he was missing his own family even though he was happy for Roger (et al).

Back in Jamie and Claire’s time, Lord John had arrived at the church, as he got there as soon as he could after hearing about Claire’s injury. He wanted to make sure for himself how she was doing and to bid her goodbye. There was clearly still tension between Jamie and Lord John, but Claire tried to bridge the gap where she could.

Then the storylines came pretty rapidly with Brianna and Jamie’s father talking about how she reminded him of his late wife Ellen and William arrived at the church to ask Jamie for help in rescuing Jane. Then as Jamie and William arrived where Jane was being held, she was shown looking up at the sky and waving, but it wasn’t clear who, or what, she was waving at. Seconds later, the men were able to break into the building, taking down a few guards in the process. Sadly, Jane had already taken her own life, and the men were too late. Before they left, though, Jamie cut a lock of her hair to give to Frances.

A short time later William was shown bringing Frances to the church to meet Claire and Jamie. William gave Frances the lock of hair and Jamie invited Frances to come live with them on the Ridge. He assured Frances that they would take care of her. William then told Jamie that he wanted to bury Jane properly and he had one other favor to ask: he wanted to know the truth of his birth.

Unfortunately, they all soon learned that Jane was placed in a pauper’s grave, which Frances wanted to visit before they left. While at Jane’s gravesite, Claire asked Frances to share a memory of her sister. Frances told Claire about being in the field with her late mother and Jane, which was the scene we saw at the start of the episode – and then Frances shared that their mother would tell them that if they waved at the blue and green lights in the sky – what Jane was obviously waving at before she was found dead by Jamie and William – then a hundred thousand angels would reach down and carry you up to heaven. It was then that Jamie gave Jane’s belongings to Frances, which included a locket that had a painted image of her mother inside with the name Faith etched on the back. Ironic that their mother was named Faith – just like Jamie and Claire’s daughter who was stillborn all those years ago, huh? [Maybe not…]

The story then jumped to Rachel and Ian lying in bed together talking about Jamie and Claire, who would be leaving for the Ridge the following day. It was then that Rachel surprised Ian with the news that she was pregnant. That wonderful news was interrupted, though, by sorrow when Ian got out of bed to discover that his faithful companion Rollo had passed in the night.

Then the story briefly returned to Roger and Brianna at Lallybroch talking about their fathers and other family members with Brianna saying how much she missed her parents and Roger wondering if his father had made it back to his own time. Roger then said to his beloved wife that “it’s not a question of where we belong, it’s when.” Could that mean that they might go through the stones to get back to her parents?

The final scene was of the family as they were getting ready to leave for the Ridge, but then Claire started to hear someone singing, but she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She walked inside the church and soon enough found Frances hidden there singing a song; a song that Claire had actually sung to the stillborn body of her baby Faith; a song from Claire’s own time called “Oh I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside”; a song that Frances learned from her mother, but a song that she couldn’t have possibly known unless her mother Faith and Jamie and Claire’s “dead” baby girl Faith were one in the same, and that that Faith had taught that song to her daughters. Then Claire remembered the words from Master Raymond, “We will see each other again.” And at that moment, as Jamie came inside the church looking for Claire, she turned to him with heavy tears in her eyes, saying, “I think Faith lived. I think our daughter lived.”

What an amazing way to wrap up the overlapping stories of Frances and Jane with Master Raymond and Jamie and Claire, but what an unbelievable possibility that their daughter Faith somehow lived thanks to Master Raymond and/or a strange twist of “fate” that will have to be answered in season 8 of the show, which will be the drama’s final season.

There is no official return date for the 8th and final season of Outlander, but given how long Droughtlander – the gaps between new seasons of the show – has lasted in the past, it could be sometime in early 2026 before that season gets underway.

In the meantime, fans of the franchise can look forward to the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood which is set to debut on Starz sometime this summer.
