My Top Choices for December TV

By  |

It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another year and that 2024 will be here before we know it. And, with the holidays in full swing, there are SO many holiday movies that it’s hard to watch them all (and I have no intentions of watching them all).

As I’ve been doing for quite some time, I have whittled down the very long list of monghtly programming options to my top choices.

DOCTOR WHO

First of all, in honor of the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, the 3-part specials that find David Tennant back as the title character and Catherine Tate back as Donna Nobel will air parts 2 and 3 on Disney+ on December 2 and December 9. Neil Patrivk Harris will play the Toymaker.

Then on Christmas Day, the holiday special The Church on Ruby Road will debut on Disney+, featuring the Doctor’s new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson from the UK’s soap opera Coronation Street), and find Ncuti Gatwa taking over the reins of the Doctor.

HOLIDAY MOVIES

There are over 40 holiday movies set to air throughout December, but I picked my top 4 based primarily on the cast members.

On December 2, the Hallmark Channel movie A Not So Royal Christmas will debut at 8 PM, starring Brooke D’Orsay and Will Kemp.

On December 7, the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie To All a Good Night at 8 PM, starring Kimberley Sustad and Mark Ghanimé.

On December 9, the Hallmark Channel movie Christmas on Cherry Lane will debut at 8 PM, starring Catherine Bell, James Denton, Jonathan Bennett and Erin Cahill [among others].

On December 16, the OWN holiday movie The Christmas Detective will debut at 9 PM, starring Javicia Leslie.

COMING TO AN END

On December 14, the very last episodes of The Crown will premiere on Netflix, bringing the six-season long series to an end.

The season finale of The Gilded Age will air at 9 PM on HBO on December 17.

BACK FOR MORE

A second season for Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson as the title character, will premiere on Amazon Prime on December 15 while the second season of the Marvel animated series What If…? will be back for a second season on Disney+, airing a new episode each night from December 22 through December 30.

NON-HOLIDAY MOVIE

Mark Wahlberg will play a former top assassin living incognito as a suburban dad in the Apple TV+ movie The Family Plan that will debut on December 15, co-starring Michelle Monaghan, Maggie Q and Ciaran Hinds.

NEW TV ADAPTATION

The first two episodes of the small screen adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will debut on Disney+ on December 20. The series, just like the box office movies, are based on the best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, focusing on 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god, Zeus (Lance Reddick), accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. The cast includes Adam Copeland, Megan Mullally, Timothy Omundsen, Toby Stephens, Jay Duplass, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
