EVIL: Burning questions for Season 3
While I’ve watched plenty of television in the pandemic years, only one show has consistently kept my attention and made me eagerly anticipate every new episode and then ponder its meaning. Maybe it says something about me that that one show is…EVIL. The demonic, bizarre, brilliant brain child of husband and wife showrunner team Michelle and Robert King, EVIL is like nothing else on TV – a religious-themed horror dramedy and paranormal procedural. If you haven’t seen the show, I’d encourage you to start with my previous post and season 1, which is available to stream on Paramount+ (season 1 originally ran on CBS before switching to Paramount+ for season 2). While season 1 set up the Mulder-Scully-and-a-skeptic-friend-work-for-the-Catholic-church premise with many solid episodes, season 2 dove deep into the characters and the show mythology, often ending in “WTF?!” territory.

If one tries to describe to someone who hasn’t seen the show some of the season 2 plotlines, they’d have to assume that the shark had long been jumped. “So, this evil psychologist asks for an exorcism and then he pretends (we think he was pretending) that it worked and then he goes home and is so wiped out that he has to bathe fully clothed in a white suit in a bathtub full of blood while drinking rootbeer to recover…”But, for some reason (that reason likely being fantastic writing and perfect casting) on EVIL it just all…works. In preparation for season 3, which will be released one episode at a time starting on Sunday, June 12th on Paramount+, I…ahem…forced…myself to do a season 2 rewatch. I came away enjoying it as much, if not more, as I did the first time.
I also came away with a number of questions that burn like a fire Jinn. Here’s hoping that at least some will be answered in season 3. Here they are (spoilers aplenty!) :
- What exactly is Kristen’s daughter Lexis and what will Kristen do when she realizes?
- Is Kristen really free of any demonic influence now?
- What the heck is Leland up to with all that blood, the cannibals, Sheryl and the goat curry?
- Was any of Leland’s “exorcism” real? If so, did it change him in any way?
- Did David join the priesthood for the wrong reasons (like trying to keep his addictions in check?)
- Is Sheryl’s doll Eddie just meant to be freaky, or does it have a real purpose?
- What is Sherly up to? Is she a demon now, or is she playing Leland and company?
- Will Kristen and Andy stay together?
- At what point does Ben become a believer ( in the paranormal, if not the Church)?
- What the heck got into Kristen and David that they kiss right after she confesses to murder and he is ordained? And where do they go from here?
Here’s the season 3 trailer:
A few other minorly spoilery tidbits for season 3: While season 2 episodes were named by the letter (“C is for Cannibal”), all the season 3 episodes are named “The Demon of xxxx”. So, in case you thought there might be fewer demons this season, that seems unlikely! Also, we can expect to see a lot more of Sister Andrea as Andrea Martin has been promoted to season regular instead of guest star.
I’m so excited for June 12th, and I hope you all are, too! Stream EVIL on Paramount+.
