Good Witch Recap: “The Dinner”

By  |

The main story of last night’s new episode of Good Witch was about a “progressive” dinner being planned by the main couples: Cassie and Sam, Abigail and Donovan, Stephanie and Adam and Tom and Martha – with Joy along for the “ride” – kind of a welcome to Middleton and the Merriwick family if you will – around the couples’ homes.

A progressive dinner is a dinner party with course prepared and eaten at the homes of different hosts. Think of it as a round-robin dinner. In the case of Good Witch, the appetizers or hors d’oeuvre (depending on which word choice is your preference) was at Martha’s home; then the entrees were at Stephanie’s house and then ending with desserts du jour at Grey House.

The other storyline was Joy sharing with her newly discovered cousins an old Merriwick tradition: dream candles. What are dream candles? A candlemaker would etch their dream into the wick tab, basically the silver piece used at the base of a candle to hold it in place inside a glass jar or bottle. According to the family’s legend, the candlemaker lets the wax set and once the candle burns down, their dream is supposed to come true.

This all lead to Cassie, Abigail and Joy talking about their dreams. Joy shared her dream is to live in Key West (Florida) in a house she built, drinking pina coladas. Abigail later shared with Donovan that her dream is to live Tuscany. That revelation didn’t exactly go over well with her boyfriend, as his dream is to become governor with Abigail by his side. This issue was interspersed throughout the episode with Donovan first saying he wished he had known about her dream before they started dating, and later in the episode, he was still reticent about it, but seemed to be a little more accepting (only a little). As for Cassie, she eventually went to Sam at the hospital, saying they should go to France – just drop everything and go. Of course, Cassie has two businesses to run and Sam is in charge at the hospital so they couldn’t just up and leave – but Sam did “play” along with her dream until Cassie came around, knowing that they could eventually make the trip just not right that second.

Joy was also surprised by Martha hiring the best carpenter in town: Carter – the guy she tried to win the clock from in last week’s episode (we all knew we hadn’t seen the last of him, right?). Not surprisingly, Joy and Carter didn’t hit it off – seeing the renovations at the Davenport Mansion in very different ways. In fact, Carter quit because of their disagreement on the renovations; but near the end of the episode Joy asked if they could have a “fresh start” – especially after she realized that she wasn’t going to be find another carpenter who was as skilled or well liked in the area. There was also that little reveal that he has a girlfriend – we’ll see how long that lasts.

The other storylines included Nick dealing with difficulties with his physics class – a class he was failing – and if he couldn’t get his grade to improve, he would be out of the program at school. But after a heart-to-heart with his dad, Nick found the confidence he needed to tackle that class. And the other was Martha filling in Dear Debbie, the local advice columnist, who was on a cruise with her husband for the week. She received a letter from “Torn Over Mischief” – that talked about a secret worry that seemed to be from one of the progressive dinner party-goers. That wasn’t the case, of course. The letter was from her husband Tom, but Cassie and Abigail played along with the ploy until Martha finally figured it out. The secret: that Martha and Tom’s son Dylan was coming to Middleton with his wife.

At the end of the story, though, something a bit more disconcerting happened. After having a disagreement over Stephanie not telling Adam that her ex-husband Wes was still in town, and then later both of them saying they loved each other – Adam dropped a glass of wine during a toast between all of the couples, and then seemed to be paralyzed, not being able to lower his arm and his hand was contorted. The scene ended with Sam trying to help Adam while a worried Stephanie looked on. Dun, dun, dun…
