When Calls the Heart Season Finale Recap: “Don’t Go”

By  |

When Calls the Heart aired the final episode of its 7th season on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday night. The synopsis of the episode was:

“Elizabeth hears news about her book; Lee gets a surprise that stirs up wounds from his past; Fiona tries to find a way to stay in Hope Valley and Lucas makes a last-ditch effort to preserve his partnership in Gowen Petroleum.”

Let’s take a look at each of the events that took place:

Elizabeth

As viewers will recall, Lucas submitted a few chapters from Elizabeth’s novel to his mother, who is a book editor. She loved Elizabeth’s writing so much she wanted to submit her work to a book publisher. Elizabeth eventually gave her approval, and at the start of the episode Lucas came to Elizabeth’s house to let her know that Frank Branson of Branson Books wanted to talk to her. After Elizabeth’s phone conversation with the book publisher, she learned she was going to make a nice sum of money for her novel.

Lee

On his first day back to work, Lee was not only dealing with Rosemary being a helicopter wife (after all she was worried about her husband as he did sustain a serious head injury during that wind storm) but also learned that his sister Susannah was coming to Hope Valley after 20 years of their being estranged. Getting Rosemary to loosen the strings was fairly easy, but contemplating the family reunion with his sister was harder.

Once his sister arrived in town, it was clear she still held a lot of animosity toward her brother for past indiscretions, but after some harsh words shared between the siblings and then a heart-to-heart talk between Susannah and Rosemary that led to the siblings beginning to patch up their relationship. In fact, they made plans to visit, as Rosemary and Lee were heading to Los Angeles the following week, and they would divert to Bellingham, Washington to meet the rest of Susannah’s family.

Fiona

Last week viewers learned that Fiona was being transferred out of Hope Valley, and while she seemed resigned to the relocation when talking to Carson and Florence it was clear on her face that she really was opposed to the move. Later in the episode, she revealed to Carson that her boss told her she was “small and dispensable” and that she should just be “thankful she has a job.” Spurred on by Carson telling her that her boss was wrong, Fiona placed a call to her boss, and told him (off camera) that wasn’t true. By doing that, she lost her job, but that meant she could stay in Hope Valley.

Henry and Lucas

The ongoing strive between the business partners rolled over into this final episode with Lucas deciding to back out of the business because he was losing his own money covering vendors expenses and employee compensation; but then he decided – after a conversation with Elizabeth – to not let all those employees down. Henry, however, gave Lucas an ultimatum, he had to buy him out of his own company completely despite the fact Lucas knows next to nothing about the oil business.

Love Triangle

Lasted, this entire season has showcased the love triangle between Elizabeth, Lucas and Nathan; and this finale was no exception. Nathan tried twice throughout the episode to ask Elizabeth a question, and right before he left for a prisoner transfer, he finally asked her out to dinner. She wasn’t ready to answer him so he told her to think about it; letting him know her decision when he returned from his latest mission. Meanwhile, Lucas invited her to the library for a champagne toast (in honor of her book publication) that was a pseudo-like date. But when it appeared Nathan might have been shot and killed during that prisoner transfer, the look on Elizabeth’s face was palpable. And when she turned around in that final scene, she saw Nathan walking toward her. Instantly, she looked so relieved, running to him, grabbing him in a big bear hug that he slowly reciprocated as a surprised Lucas looked on.

Series lead Erin Krakow announced at the very end of the season finale that When Calls the Heart will be back on the Hallmark Channel with an 8th season. It is unclear, of course because of the global pandemic, when filming will happen or when the next chapter of the series will air.
