When Calls the Heart Recap: “New Possibilities”

By  |

Sunday night’s episode of When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel was the penultimate episode of the show’s 7th season.

The episode picked up right where last week’s episode ended with the residents of Hope Valley concerned about Lee Coulter, who had suffered a head injury during the wind storm that hit their little community.

As everyone awaited word on his condition, many of the townspeople gathered at the Cafe to wait. When Elizabeth arrived there the morning after Lee’s accident, she discovered there was no update on his health so she took upon herself to head straight over to the client to learn for herself.

Thankfully Elizabeth was greeted by Carson and Rosemary with a recovered Lee awake and alert, and anxious to get home. Granted he was going to have a couple weeks of rest and relaxation ahead of him – since he did sustain a pretty intense head injury – but he was on the road to recovery.

Because of his accident, though, he seemed to be reflecting on his life. In fact, he dug out an old box of momentos from the attic of his and Rosemary’s home, sharing a picture from his childhood that included his younger brother Patrick as well as his – SURPRISE! – an older sister named Susannah.

That revelation came as quite a shock to Rosemary since Lee had never mentioned a sister before. Lee explained that they had a falling out many years ago after the loss of both his little brother and then their mother. He left home at 18 and learned a few years later that his father had passed away, and he missed his own father’s funeral. Needless to say, Lee and Susannah became estranged and 20 years later, after his injury, he wondered about her.

With the help of Rosemary and Fiona, who tracked down 18 different women in Washington, Lee got to speak – albeit momentarily – to his sister. Sadly, she hung up on him as soon as he told her it was him on the line. Undeterred, Rosemary told Lee they would talk about the situation more; but then he made another call to his sister, telling her they need to talk. Rather than hang up this time, she at least told him that she would “have to think about it.”

Elsewhere, Lucas upset Elizabeth when he told her that he sent several chapters of her book to his mother, the book editor, who was delighted by them, wanting to send them to a book publisher. Naturally, Elizabeth was upset with Lucas because he did not ask her if he could send the chapters, he just did that on his own. Soon enough, Lucas saw the error of his ways, and Elizabeth forgave him for the oversight; and eventually consented to his mother’s wishes. She agreed her chapters could be sent to a book publisher.

Also, Fiona was back in Hope Valley after being in San Francisco for what she claimed was for work and family; but it turned out that she may have been in California to fight to keep her job in Hope Valley. It was revealed near the end of the episode that she was being transferred and would have to leave next week.

Elizabeth and Nathan were attempting to mend their relationship after the argument they had the previous day once the windstorm had calmed. It was clear to Elizabeth that Nathan was upset about more than Elizabeth risking her life to find Emily; but he wouldn’t come clean with her. In turn, she told Nathan that the reason she was in Union City with Lucas – for the Virginia Wolfe presentation – was because “he asked me.” Perhaps taking that revelation as a sign, Nathan came to Elizabeth’s house to eventually tell her that he wants her to be safe because she matters to him.

There are also two new faces in town. One being a safe cracker named Elias (Edward Ruttle, who played Michael, Martha’s son on Good Witch) who Nathan arrested at the train station and a young woman (Paloma Kwiatkowski, from Bates Motel and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), who claimed she was just “passing through town,” but she was also at the train station at the time Nathan arrested the safe cracker. Is her arrival just a coincidence or could there be more to her than meets the eye?

Lastly, Henry finally provided the financial records to Lucas – avoiding what could have turned into a nasty legal battle between the business partners. As it turns out, Gowen Petroleum has been losing money, and Henry was afraid to not only admit that the business was failing but to also lose the respect he had finally gained after spending so many years being feared, hated and scorned by so many people.
