When Calls the Heart Recap: “Into the Woods”

By  |

Sunday night’s new episode of When Calls the Heart focused on what happened when the surroundsing woods of Hope Valley were hit with a nasty wind storm that caused a crisis not only for Elizabeth and some of her school children as well as Lee and Jesse.

A Tale of Two Suitors

Elizabeth’s voice over at the beginning of the episode found her reminscing about her outing with Lucas, but mentioning that she felt a shift in Nathan toward her. She is clearly torn between the two suitors, not wanting to hurt either of them. As she stated, “all I can do is be honest with them,” but what exactly is going through her mind. Lucas gave her a leather-bound autographed copy of Virginia Wolfe’s book from their outing, while Nathan has been giving her nothing but the cold shoulder.

A Moment of Joy

Lee surprised Rosemary with a brand-new anniversary gift: a trip to Los Angeles. But there was much more to it than just a trip to the City of Angels. He arranged for them to go on a cruise that would take them to Chile, Rio de Janeiro and New York City. Needless to say, Rosemary was extremely delighted, but she warned Lee not to hurt his back as he picked her up and swung her around. That warning was a little prophetic given what happened.

School Days, School Days

Elizabeth reminded half of the school kids that they would going into the woods – to Simon’s Pass – to learn about plants and trees while the other half of the kids, who already had a chance to go on their field trip would be learning about science courtesy of Carson.

While the kids got a chance to learn about foliage as well as young Emily finding an arrowhead, their lives became in peril when a wind storm hit Simon’s Pass, making it necessary for Elizabeth to lead the children to a nearby hunter’s cabin. But, trouble brewed when Emily made a rash decision to go back for her arrowhead, getting temporarily lost. Thankfully, Mountie Nathan showed up to help in the search; but it was Elizabeth who found the missing girl, as she decided to go outside the cabin to look for both Nathan and Emily.

This made for an awkward and ultimately angry interaction between Elizabeth and Nathan. He yelled at Elizabeth, telling her to “just let me do my job.” But viewers could clearly see that there was more to his being upset with Elizabeth than just Emily and his niece Allie, who was part of the classroom on the field trip.

Getting Hurt

Before the wind storm, Jesse was out in the woods conducting a timber grading as part of his new assignment from work; but because of the storm, he hadn’t checked in, causing those at the mill to be worried about him. When Lee learned about the situation, he headed out to try to find Jesse – while Nathan headed out to look for Elizabeth and the school kids.

Eventually, Rosemary went to Bill about Jesse being missing, and he set out with Henry, Lucas and Carson as part of the search party. Rosemary and Clara also set out in a buckboard to look for their husbands. When a shot rang out in the woods, the ladies heading off in the direction of the sound, finding all of the men from the search party as well as Jesse. Obviously, Clara was relieved that her husband was fine, but it was quickly revealed that Lee had been seriously injured.

As it turned out, a tree had fallen, blocking Jesse from getting through in his wagon; and when Lee found him, the two men tried to clear the way. Lee was up in the tree trying to clear some of the branches, but fell and suffered a major head injury.

The episode ended with Jesse feeling very guilty while Rosemary – in a very calm manner (she was obviously in shock) – told Carson that he has to use every ounce of his knowledge to heal her husband, saying “He is my life.”
