When Calls the Heart Recap: “Heart of a Writer”

By  |

Sunday night’s new episode of When Calls the Heart focused on Elizabeth accepting an invitation from Lucas to go to Union City for reading by Virginia Wolfe while Lee and Rosemary took care of little Jack (and the challenges that entailed) while newlyweds Jesse and Clara adjusted to sharing a home.

Welcome Home, Newlyweds

Jesse and Clara returned home from their honeymoon in Los Angeles, being greeted by their friends. While they had an amazing time in the city, they were both happy to be home; but Jesse seemed to be a bit off. He and Clara were going to be sharing a home together, the home above Abigail’s cafe since, as viewers will recall Abigail was the widow of Abigail’s son. As the episode progressed, it appeared that Jesse was having a hard time adapting to married life, selling off or giving away most of his belongings even leaving his boots to get cold outside the front door. As it turned out, Jesse was worried about making his life (and belongings) fit into Clara’s life and home above the cafe. Clara reassured him that while living there may be temporarily she wants it be “our house.”

NOTE: It was so nice to see some of the photos that Carson took, as he made a photo album for Jesse and Clara to remember their special day.

Accepting An Invitation

After Nathan brought an apple to his niece Allie’s favorite teacher, Lucas showed up moments later to invite Elizabeth to Union City to hear new author Virginia Wolfe perform a reading of her current work. Being a fan of Wolfe’s writing, Elizabeth wanted to accept the invitation, but – as she eventually shared with Rosemary – she didn’t want to give Lucas the wrong idea. She did accept the invitation, but made sure that Lucas understood they were attending as friends only. It was interesting to hear what Lucas had to say to Elizabeth during both their picnic lunch on the way to Union City as well as during their dinner after Wolfe’s reading. It’s clear that he is a very patient man – and has feelings for Elizabeth – but it seemed that Elizabeth was not quite ready to move in that direction.

NOTE: Elizabeth did look very pretty in the borrowed dress from Rosemary; and it was quite comical that the hotel clerk inadvertently thought Lucas and Elizabeth were husband and wife, but I, for one, was relieved that Lucas set the record straight very quickly.

Adventures in Babysitting

Rosemary and Lee took care of little Jack while Elizabeth was gone overnight for the Union City outing with Lucas. At first, they both felt they could handle one night with the little boy, but it became quickly apparent that they had their hands full. Their adventures in babysitting turned rough when they inadvertently lost little Jack’s favorite stuffed toy – his little purple dog (which they evenutally found buried under a pillow on their couch). Rosemary not only had difficulty getting little Jack to eat but also to get him to go to sleep. But when Elizabeth arrived to retrieve little Jack the following morning, both Lee and Rosemary told her that everything was just fine (even though it had been); and then they agreed that “it’s quiet” once little Jack was back with his mother.

NOTE: I have to wonder if this will spur the couple to wanting to have a child of their own. Given that it seems Rosemary cannot have a child perhaps they will consider to adopt. After all, they do know Lillian and Grace (from spin-off series When Hope Calls), who run an orphanage.

Hurt Feelings

While Elizabeth wanted to make sure Lucas understood that her accepting his invitation was only as a sign of friendship, Nathan seemed to be a bit on edge about her leaving with Lucas. When he arrived back in Hope Valley from Cape Fullerton – where he was a witness in a court case – he learned from his niece Allie that Elizabeth went away with Lucas. His chopping all that wood was a clear indication that he was frustrated, but the cold shoulder he gave Elizabeth she returned the following morning was a validation of his being upset.

NOTE: The scene between Nathan and Bill about cutting wood was very funny!
