When Calls the Heart Recap: “In Perfect Unity”

By  |

A new episode of When Calls the Heart aired on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, focusing on the wedding of Jesse Flynn and Clara Stanton.

Memories

With Jesse and Clara’s wedding only a few days away, Elizabeth was writing her thoughts down in her journal, harkening back to her own wedding day and the precious memories she holds for her beloved late husband Jack.

Two Suitors

In the beginning of the episode, Elizabeth was throwing out both bouquets of flowers brought to her by Nathan and Lucas. When questioned about it by Rosemary, Elizabeth said, “they are wonderful men” but that she wants to remain just friends. That moment, however, that she had with Lucas at the library, obviously made her stop for a moment.

To Be a Mountie or To Not Be a Mountie

At school, Elizabeth is surprised by her student Robert, who tells her that he wants to become a Mountie. In fact, he has decided to enroll next year, skipping his final year of school. Of course, Elizabeth is concerned for his safety as well as his education – but knows that it is his decision. However, she asks Nathan if he will talk to Robert about what it really means to be a Mountie. Robert was given the chance to spend a day with Nathan, shadowing him if you will, and has an interaction with a prisoner, accused of stealing horses. When the prisoner attempted to run away during a prisoner transfer, Robert watched as Nathan raced after and stopped the man’s attempt. To Robert, Nathan seemed unafraid; but when asked, Nathan freely admitted he was afraid, but it is all part of his job to uphold the peace. In the end, Robert decided to complete school, as he wasn’t quite ready – just yet – to become a Mountie.

Is It Just Jitters?

Throughout the episode, it was clear that something was on Clara’s mind. Yes, there were lots of last-minute preparations for their wedding to complete – final fittings, finding her something old something new something borrowed and something blue – but while she told everyone that it was just jitters, it was clear that it was something much more than that.

When finally asked by Elizabeth just what was really wrong, Clara said that she found her first husband’s vows in a box where she thought her grandmother’s earrings were stored. Those beautifully written vows started making her a bit melancholy not to mention worried “what if something happened to Jesse” (as viewers will remember Clara was married to Abigail’s son Peter who died). Elizabeth assured that even if she had known what would happen to Jack that she would have married him anyway. That heart-to-heart conversation was touching and just the words of encouragement that Clara needed to hear.

Saying I Do

The majority of the episode was focused on the big day. Unfortunately, their outdoor wedding was trampled due to a rainstorm; but a quick-thinking Elizabeth gathered up everyone in town to move everything into the saloon, turning the dining area into a bower of flowers and adornments. The wedding was beautiful and tender with Jesse and Clara exchanging their vows and rings followed by the cutting of the cake, toasts to the happy couple by Lee and Rosemary and a father-daughter dance between Clara and Bill. When it came time for the flower toss, that was nearly forgotten about by the bride, Elizabeth held off in the back of the room; but Clara would have none of that, telling Elizabeth to join the rest of the single women. As the flowers flew into the air and landed firmly in Elizabeth’s hands, you could see her surprise and the awkward looks shared between Lucas and Nathan.

Words of Love

The episode ended with another voice-over by Elizabeth, speaking about the love you have for your child, the love between a husband and wife, the love you have for your friends and “possibly someone new.”
