ONE CHICAGO: 10 Things About CHICAGO MED 5×15, CHICAGO FIRE 8×15 and CHICAGO P.D. 7×15
In case you missed the news, NBC has renewed the ONE CHICAGO franchise for another three seasons, which will see CHICAGO MED sticking around til at least season 8, CHICAGO FIRE til at least season 11 and CHICAGO P.D. until season 10. Pending the lengths of each seasons, this will mean we will also most likely see the latter two hit 200 episodes! This means we’ll have plenty to continue to talk about when it comes to the ONE CHICAGO world. In the meantime, here are 10 things we’re highlighting from the latest episodes this week; CHICAGO MED “I Will Do No Harm”, CHICAGO FIRE “Off the Grid” and CHICAGO P.D. “Burden of Truth”…
1. A CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D. crossover
This week saw multiple opioid overdoses bring the FIRE and P.D. teams together when a familiar face had a connection to the case. In the first hour on FIRE, we saw P.D.‘s Atwater, Ruzek, Burgess and Voight pop up. Then in the second hour, you may have spotted FIRE‘s Severide, Boden, Brett and Mouch at some point throughout.
2. A FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS TO CHICAGO
Former P.D. cop Sean Roman (played by Brian Geraghty) returned to the ONE CHICAGO world. A patrol officer during seasons 2 and 3, Roman ended up leaving Chicago for San Diego when he was injured on the job. He was dating partner Burgess at the time and asked her to come with him and she declined. Why has her returned to Chicago after all these years? It turns out one of the opioid victims was his younger sister’s best friend and now his sister is missing. He shows up at Firehouse 51 to speak to Brett who attended the call. Severide also becomes involved, since he knows a thing or two about missing sisters. (Remember when his half sister Katie was kidnapped?) Roman’s involvement in the case becomes a bit suspicious though when it’s revealed that Intelligence had no idea that Roman was in town or the connection with his sister, despite him telling Brett and Severide that he had already been to see Voight and co but couldn’t get involved since he wasn’t a cop any more. What’s your deal Roman?
3. BURGESS AND ROMAN PARTNER BACK UP
Despite Roman’s initial shiftiness, Voight allows him to join their investigation and assigns him to work with ex partner (in both ways) Burgess. Not at all awkward. Adding to the awkwardness of the situation, he notices that her colleagues at District 21 seem particularly sympathetic towards her and when he tries to probe her, she brushes him off. Finally after one interrogation too many, she tells him that she and Ruzek got back together and she was pregnant and now she’s not. This was not the answer he was expecting so cue awkwardness once again.
4. ROMAN THE KILLER
It turns out that Roman’s sister was dating and dealing the drug dealer responsible for the opioid overdoses in Chicago. Unfortunately there is no happy ending to this case – Burgess and Roman find her frozen to death outside a lakehouse and she had been there for a week. Roman’s parents don’t take the news well and his father attacks him, crying that his sister needed him. The investigation isn’t over though when the dealer is found dead. Burgess stumbles upon some information, which makes her realise that Roman is possibly involved. When Voight suspects that she knows something, she remains poker faced. Various members of District 21 and Firehouse 51 show up to attend Roman’s sisters funeral. Roman gives a passionate eulogy about how he wasn’t there for his sister and that is something that he will have to carry around with him forever. When Voight approaches him at the end of the service, he braces himself to be arrested. Instead, Voight informs him that the investigation will be kept open but it is no longer a priority. Voight recognizes what Roman has gone through and is letting him off the hook.
5. BURGESS BREAKS DOWN OVER HER MISCARRIAGE
Since she lost the baby, Burgess has kept a tough facade and also distanced herself from Ruzek. When she sees that Ruzek still has the sonogram still pinned up in his locker, she questions why he still has it. This then leads to them finally having a conversation about the miscarriage. She’s convinced that he should be angry at her and he is startled that she would think such a thing when he sees that she saved someone’s life. She’s been projecting the anger that she feels as something she thinks he should feel – she should have never gone in there, she should have waited for back up. If she had then she’d still be pregnant right now. This scene was heartbreaking to watch and wow, what a performance by Marina Squerciati – Women of the Week standards right there.
6. BRETT MEETS HER BIRTH MOM
Most of FIRE and P.D. focused on the crossover storyline about the opioid overdoses, but FIRE also fit in developments with Brett’s birth mom storyline. After retrieving the letter from Casey last week, Brett decides to go to the address on the letter. Casey drives her but when she arrives, a man answers the door and denies that anyone by the name of Brett’s birth mom lives at that address, leaving Brett feeling very confused. Surely her birth mother wouldn’t give her a fake address. Why go to all that effort? Later, the woman shows up at 51 and tells Brett that her husband had only just found out was still processing and they would like her to come over. She also reveals that she’s pregnant. She had Brett at 16 and wasn’t expecting to be pregnant again at age 46.
7. DR. HALSTEAD AND DR. ASHER DRAMA
At the end of the last MED episode, we saw Dr Halstead and Dr Asher get a little too cosy at Molly’s. This week’s episode opens up the morning after where they wake up in bed together but she assures him that she still intends to follow through with her plan to turn herself in to Goodwin. Halstead heads to work but is concerned when she doesn’t show up and he can’t reach her, particularly when one of her patients needs her and refuses the medical advice of anyone else. As the hours go by, Will is getting desperate – he even leaves the hospital to go to the clinic but she’s not there. She finally shows up and claims her phone broke. Will doesn’t believe her though and lashes out her, accusing her of getting high. She in turn lashes out him protesting her innocence. This is the last straw though and Will asks the security guard to bring the sniffer dog to Hannah’s car. The dog senses something just as Hannah shows up. Fade to black.
8. SEXTON SIBLINGS TEAM UP
The ER is busy but there’s a man in town that requires immediate medical attention so April and Noah are sent out into the field. When they arrive, they find a man who accidentally took the wrong dose of medication and now needs to keep continiually moving in order to keep his heart rate up so he doesn’t die. It’s going to take eight hours for his dosage to wear off and the man can’t keep up being active for that time so the siblings need to come up with a plan. In the end, April convinces her brother to perform a tricky procedure. He’s freaked out because he doesn’t think he is qualified to do it but April assures him that he can and that she’ll talk him through it. There ends up being a slight hiccup but April swoops in and the main thing is the man is okay at the end.
9. DR. CHOI AND DR. MARCEL TEAM UP
Dr. Choi and Dr. Marcel end up working together on a death row patient who somehow ended up surviving his lethal injection. They both have differing opinion about how to treat the patient. The patient’s condition worsens (it looks like they’ll have to amputate) and in the end, they make the call to just let him die. When Goodwin questions them, they tell her they did all they could but she looks skeptical. At the end of shift, Choi asks April if she minds if they grab a drink with Crockett first because of their tough case. She tells him to go on ahead without her, so he decides not to and for them to have their date night instead. We were thisclose to not having any love triangle drama in this episode!
10. THE METHOD ACTOR
Another interesting case brought into MED involved a method actor that Dr. Manning and Dr. Charles were treating. At first we thought he was a polymer scientist but his ‘ex-wife’ reveals that he’s actually an actor from New York that she hired to play her daughter’s father. When Nat confronts him with the truth, he sticks to his story of being the scientist. Frustrated that she can’t treat him properly, she calls in Dr Charles to look at her patient that she dubs as ‘nuts’. As a doctor, is it professional for her to call him that? The man is very method and even Dr Charles has trouble getting through to him. The woman has decided that this charade has to stop but the man being the method actor that he is, needs to stage the end of the performance and to him that he is dying in front of the young girl. Yes, this is pretty drastic and he almost goes through with it. But then the young girl is sobbing for her daddy not to die and he realises that he can’t put her through that and he admits what he took.
The ONE CHICAGO line up airs Wednesday nights on NBC; beginning with CHICAGO MED, followed by CHICAGO FIRE and concluding with CHICAGO P.D..
