NICE BOY OF THE WEEK: Dean Geyer

By  |

Meet our Nice Boy of the Week: Dean Geyer.

The former Glee actor stars in the new UPtv movie Once Upon a Date, which debuts Sunday, February 9 at 7 PM ET, starring alongside Hallmark Channel alum Katrina Bowden (Love on the Slopes).

Once Upon a Date movie posterOnce Upon a Date follows top-notch real estate broker Josh Donahue (Geyer) as he heads to a small town to buy out a local community playhouse. Of course, the process can’t be as easy and making an offer and signing over a deed. Nope, while checking out the playhouse, Josh unexpectedly falls for the owner’s daughter (Bowden), forcing him to decide between the family business and true love.

Rounding out the main cast are Francia Raisa (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Titus Makin Jr. (The Rookie) and James Callis (Battlestar Galactica).

We had the opportunity to talk to Dean Geyer about the movie, getting to know James Callis, his music projects, and more.

Can you tell us a little about Once Upon a Date beyond the synopsis?

Once Upon a Date is about a group of everyday people trying to navigate the ups and downs of life, relationships, and ultimately what they treasure to be most important to them. It’s a story that shows the differences between people with financial success and the power they hold over others that are struggling to get by. Throughout the movie, we get to see the growth of each character, and the consequences of what they choose to do and sometimes don’t do. We follow the journey of what happens when people step outside of their comfort zone to find what truly makes them happy.

What’s an attribute about your character in this movie that you admire?

It might sound bad because it’s also something in the movie that he has to shake off a little to learn the difference between what’s right and wrong in the situation he has been put in. But taken out of the context of this particular scenario, [I admire his] ability to take hold of a job and really excel at it with a huge amount of precision and follow-through. I find that to be a really attractive trait in a person. To be able to walk the walk with such great work ethic is a huge thumbs up from me. So kudos to Josh.

Do you share any scenes with James Callis? What was it like working with him?

I didn’t get a whole lot of screen time with James, but I did get to know him as a person while spending time on set. I think he is a fantastic, hardworking actor and an equally great human being. I don’t think there is one person on that set that could not get along with him. He brought such a lightness to set and was very professional.

We loved Glee here at NGTV and followed it during its original run. What was it like being part of the show and singing with Lea Michele?

Singing with Lea was really a dream come true for me. Glee was such an icon show from the moment it hit the screen, and to be a part of it was such an honor. Lea is such a veteran in the entertainment industry (even though she is still so young) so one thing I learned from her is how to be relaxed but laser-focused at the same time. She was always in a good mood and was a true delight to be around. I’ve been performing as a musician for a while now, so singing with her was the easy part for me. Getting to perform with her was an all-around epic experience.

You just put out a single; do you have more music-related projects in the works?

I have been in the studio writing some new music over the past month. My new single called ‘The Pretender’ is out now on every platform you can buy and listen from. The follow up to that song will be out in the coming weeks. I’m keen to get a lot more out in 2020. More music means more chance of a potential tour, so fingers crossed. Follow me on my Instagram page @realdeangeyer and also on Twitter @geyerdean for more info on the releases.

Do you have a dream project that you want to work on?

I’d love to work on an action movie next. My dream project would be to book a role with Marvel. I’ve done martial arts my entire life, and I have always excelled at physical sports, so I feel that it would be a great fit for me. That or a comedy opposite Will Farrell.

Can you share one thing about yourself that might surprise your fans?

I am an avid wine lover. My wife (actress Jillian Murray, who TV viewers will recognize from Code Black) and I got married up in Santa Ynez, and we try and get up there quite often to enjoy the time away from the city, enjoy each others company, and get a little tipsy on our favorite wines!

Do you have a charity that you support?

Yes, I do! Please check out the website for the Kevin Richardson Foundation, which will be able to explain what they are all about.
