THE BOLD TYPE: Talking Career, Love and Personal in ‘#scarlet’

This week’s episode of  THE BOLD TYPE saw the launch of Scarlet digital and the bold trio examining past events in different ways. This gave us plenty to talk about in terms of career, love and personal!

CAREER

Although Scarlet may now be Digital only, the girls’ jobs are all safe. Jacqueline herself is adjusting to the changes, especially since she thought she’d be co-steering the ship with Patrick, who decided to leave at the end of last episode. It’s not before long that Jacqueline is falling into old habits and putting work first, which puts her at odds with her husband Ian and his own career path. Also facing a career crisis in the Safford world is Richard. He was planning on taking a sabbatical to go and pursue his passion project in San Francisco, only to be told that Safford no longer allow sabbaticals. The only way he’ll be able to go to San Francisco is if her resigns… which he does!

During a girls night out, the girls discover that Jacqueline’s assistant Andrew moonlights as a drag queen. The next day while discussing the new vision for Scarlet Digital, Kat is inspired and thinks that Andrew could become one of the faces for their Digital platform. He is touched by her gesture.

LOVE

When Richard shares the news with her that he’ll have to leave Safford rather than go on sabbatical, Sutton is quietly worried and when he turns down her attempts for a quick hookup during work hours, she’s even more worried. What she doesn’t realize is that, no things aren’t going stale with them – Richard is putting plans into play for their future. During the Scarlet Digital launch party, he apologizes to her for brushing her off the day before and lets her know that the boardroom is currently free if you know what we mean. After hooking up in the boardroom and fulfilling one of their fantasies, Richard kneels down – Sutton thinks he’s going to go down on her, only for him to pull out a ring and propose! (The boardroom was where they first met.) She immediately accepts and later shares the news with her two best friends, only to realize they already knew what Richard was planning because he asked for their blessing. Aww!

Meanwhile, Ryan is back and trying his best to be a doting boyfriend to Jane. She’s been having weird dreams involving him and it has her acting a little weird around him. Initially she thinks it’s related to her concerns about getting her test results back. When the dreams continue after she gets the all clear, she realizes that she’s having these dreams because she doesn’t completely trust him and is still trying to get past him cheating on her.

Also having trouble in paradise is Jacqueline and her husband Ian. As mentioned, he’s not impressed that her career is being put above his and at the end of the episode, informs her that he took an assignment in Ukraine, which means she’ll have to pick up the slack with the kids while he’s away.

PERSONAL

Jane has a routine breast check for her BRCA mutation gene and is initially anxious that she has to wait for the results, but once the results are in, she then procrastinates getting them. She eventually works up the courage to call the doctors with her best friends by her side in the fashion closet, and is relieved when she is told she is fine. In this episode, Kat struggles with a past encounter she had with musician Bella Diaz when she was starting out on Scarlet five years ago. Bella had confided in Kat that she was gay and wanted Scarlet’s help in coming out. However, Bella’s manager caught word of this and told Kat that it would ruin Bella’s career if she came out. Kat kept quiet and now that she’s seeing Bella again, she regrets the way she handled the situation and wants to help Bella. Bella has no bad feelings towards Kat and doesn’t think she’s ready to go public anymore.
