My Top Choices for December TV
Can you believe the year is almost over? Thanksgiving is only a few days away – Happy Turkey Day everyone! – for those of us in the United States and Christmas is only a few weeks away.
With December just around the corner, there are 45 holiday-themed movies set to debut throughout the month as well as the debut of several new dramas and a big crossover event.
While there is a LOT to choose from in December, I’ve made my top selections for the month:
Celebrating Christmas
Out of all of those holiday movies – there seem to be more and more all over TV, right?! – I’ve whittled down that long list with my top 7 choices:
On December 5, the Netflix original film, the third in the franchise, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby will debut, finding Amber (Rose McIver) and Richard (Ben Lamb) hosting royals from a faraway kingdom to renew a sacred truce, but when the priceless treaty disappears, peace is put in jeopardy and an ancient curse threatens their family.
Glee alum Lea Michele will star in the ABC original telefilm Same Time, Next Christmas at 9 PM on December 5. Olivia Henderson met her childhood sweetheart (Charles Michael Davis from Younger and The Originals) during her family’s annual Christmas visit to Hawaii. After being separated by distance and years, the two reunite at the same Hawaii resort years later and the old chemistry between them flares up anew – but circumstances conspire to keep them apart.
On December 7, A Christmas Love Story will debut on the Hallmark Channel at 8 PM, starring Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth is a youth choir director who needs to write a big song for a Christmas Eve show but is distracted when a boy with a golden voice joins her choir, which comes as a surprise to his widowed father (Scott Wolf from Nancy Drew and Party of Five).
Kellie Martin and Colin Ferguson star in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie Christmas in Montana on December 14 at 9 PM. Before the holidays, Sara goes to Montana to help resistant Travis save his ranch. Can time on the ranch help restore her faith in Christmas in time for a miracle?
On December 14, the Hallmark Channel movie Holiday Date will debut at 8 PM. When Brooke’s (Brittany Bristow from Love on Safari) boyfriend, Ethan, breaks up with her just before the holidays, she agrees to go home with Joel (Matt Cohen from Supernatural), an actor who will pose as her boyfriend. She’s built up the ex-boyfriend to be the perfect guy and ‘Mr. Christmas’ but discovers Joel is Jewish and has never celebrated the holiday. What he lacks in experience he makes up for in enthusiasm and happily participates in yuletide festivities.
Eric Mabius and Tricia Helfer will star in the Hallmark Channel movie It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas on December 21 at 8 PM. As mayors of neighboring New Hampshire towns, longtime rivals Liam and Sarah are determined to best each other on their way to leading their hamlets to victory in the annual statewide “Christmas Spirit Competition.” When both towns unexpectedly advance to the contest’s final round, the mayors decide their best hope lies in working with, rather than against, each other. As they collaborate on a celebration showing what Christmas means to their communities, they discover their own holiday miracle: love.
On December 22, the Hallmark Channel movie Double Holiday will debut at 8 PM. Career-minded Rebecca’s (Carly Pope from Popular and Arrow) plans for Hanukkah go askew when a promotion opportunity comes up at work. When the company CEO asks Rebecca and her insufferable office mate, Chris (Kristoffer Polaha) – also her main competitor for the promotion – to plan the company’s Christmas party, she realizes they must overcome their opposing styles in order to succeed.
Crossover Crisis
For a number of years now, The CW has been doing a crossover of their DC Comics series and this year’s event is going to be monumental, covering 5 of the shows and loads of guest appearances, including Tom Welling and Erica Durance from Smallville and Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Bulloch reprising their roles.
Supergirl will kick off “Crisis on Infinite Earths” on December 8 at 8 PM followed by Batwoman on December 9 at 8 PM and then The Flash on December 10 at 8 PM.
NOTE: The last two parts of the crossover, focusing on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, will air back-to-back on January 14.
Welcome to the Fold
A couple new series, that are not actually holiday-related, set to debut in December are:
Reprisal on Hulu on December 6. The series focuses on a relentless femme fatale who, after being left for dead, leads a vengeful campaign against a bombastic gang of gearheads.
This is not my typical kind of show, but Abigail Spencer from Timeless, Mena Massoud from the latest Aladdin box office flick and Rodrigo Santoro from Love Actually are part of the cast.
The Witcher on Netflix on December 20. The series follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
This fantasy series stars Henry Cavill. Need I say more?!
Action in December
The Netflix feature film 6 Underground will debut online on December 13. Six individuals form a vigilante squad after faking their deaths in order to take down notorious criminals. All of them were brought to the team by its leader (Ryan Reynolds) for their unique skills and a desire to erase their past and change the future.
Holiday Special
It’s become a tradition on the Hallmark Channel to have a When Calls the Heart Christmas movie air on Christmas Day, and this year is no different. When Calls the Heart: Home for Christmas will air at 8 PM and will find all the residents of Hope Valley gearing up for the holiday, focusing on finding the perfect gift for Little Jack, who will celebrate his first birthday AND first Christmas.
